I think the most important factor in the record being a hit, was the fact that the machinery was in place to make it one. "Rummenigge" is not WLD's best song. However, it is quirky and it was about someone, who was well known at the time. It was that much easier for the record company to market.
It is, in fact, a well crafted song. I was pleasantly surprised that it was not the normal, desperate terrace chorus affair, with a cretinous chant every couple of lines. It is rather a bit of tongue in cheek innuendo about a very straight laced young (at the time) man, who was famous for running very fast and kicking footballs very hard. To call it a "fluke" is a bit harsh. It is opportunist and daft, but not cynical and not dumb.
Big Al Whittle has written songs, which deserve to be considerably better known. The record companies have not perceived them as being easy to market. That's the difference really. It is an irony of fate that for some people, Big Al Whittle will be remembered for a song, which showed only a fraction of his ability as a writer. That does not make his success any less deserved. "Rummenigge" deserved to be a novelty hit single. Is it the fault of the record companies or of the public at large that they missed a whole lot more?

A word of advice to all songwriters - never try and write a follow up. the record company said , you must know some more famous Germans you could write about!

I suggested paul Schockemoller the horse jumper - but they said no, not even the Germans know about him. What about Bernhardt Lnager, the golfer

In the months after Rummenigge. I wrote Beckenbauer Beckenbauer (which was truly horrendous and got released on as 12" club mix as well as a 7"). there was also one abot Rummenigge's brother Michael Rummenigge - Michael Rummenigge to the tune of Michael Row the boat Ashore. the Hitler's diary Song which contained the lines

I'm sitting here in me Bunker
Me syphilis is playing me up
Eva let go of me plonker
Put it back in the stredent cup!

Chorus:
Hold on Eva, you'll have to wait
I'm not going nothing
Till i get me diary up to date!

Then came the Boris Becker win at Wimbeldon and we got commissioned to write a piece about Boris - and I wrote a gem called Give her one Boris!

Denise: If you give me one Boris, I'll love you for evermore
Alan: Give her one Boris! Give her one Boris!

What I mean is none of these songs ever saw the light of day. And I began to realise that the Rummenigge thing was a fluke. probably anybody could have done it. And i had wasted too much of my life like the guy in the peter Cook sketch who spent his life trying to teach ravens to fly underwater.

And there they were, Alan & Denise - Denise as beautiful as ever, Alan looking a bit older (small wonder). He appeared in disguise as a fan of the German team in a high topped hat painted black, red, and gold.
Their song, still well known in Germany, was applauded with the frenzy it merited. Sometimes pictures of both were faded in showing them singing in 1983.

They are both in the German version of Wikipedia

The words of their witty song about Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

It was a perfect production and a joy to see a fellow Mudcatter from abroad on the German telly.

Ina will be dead pleased, because it means "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" won't be on. Still, let's hope it is a big hit all over again and the invitations (and loot) roll in for one of Mudcat's finest.
The real Al Whittle has brilliant songs like "St Peter and John Dillinger" among others. Wouldn't it be great if they could reach a bigger audience?

Sorry, I've lost the thread. Some weeks ago a Mudcatter wrote that his song about the German soccer player Rummenigge will be sung in German TV.

This will happen at Monday, May 29, 20:15, in RTL (the best football songs of all times)
