Guest of 0949 hr: Canadians occasionally leave home, and those of us who play diddly music like to do so wherever we go. Montreal is a hot spot for music, and both these individuals could well know of a session in the Richelieu Valley. There's also plenty of music going on in the Eastern Townships.

Simon-Pierre was from Quebec City. That's 180 miles from Montreal. Banjo Bonnie was from Toronto. That's 300 miles from Montreal.

I haven't seen him around here in awhile, but we had a member from Montreal who posted as "simon-pierre." You might try PMing him. I will also send an email to Banjo Bonnie and ask if she knows of any good sessions. That's great that he is at his guitar, again.

I don`t know if it is still up-to-date, but your brother might call the pubs and ask. Also I haven`t been to the sessions, so it would be nice if you could post some feedback - might be useful when I visit my canadian friend (who sadly isn`t interested in folk) and for a young guy from a session I attend who is emigrating to Montreal next year.

To bad he doesn't live on the West end of the Island. I attend 3 different jams a month. I know of a place near the Richelieu that have jams but not sure if they still have them. The place is called "Carignan". Now if he lives near there he could ask city hall or check out community bulletins. There is also a place near Three Rivers but this may be to far for him.

My brother has a guitar and can play the basic chords in several different keys. However, because he is not the best singer in the world, he has convinced himself that he has no musical talent. Every now and again, he will get the guitar out and set about learning a tune but this lasts about three weeks until he runs out of enthusiasm and puts it away again for another couple of years.

Last month he came to visit me and I took him to a local mixed tunes/songs session. Even though he was basically an observer, he learnt two basic facts:
(i) you don't have to be a lead player/singer to join in;
(ii) there were people there getting by with more or less the chords he can already cope with.

He's gone back to Canada now but it has inspired him enough to pick up his guitar again. I know that I find playing with others is the best way to learn and improve, so I would love to be able to point him towards some communal music in his locale. He lives about 35 miles east of Montreal, on the River Richelieu.

Does anyone know of anything going on around there?
