PM me with your home addy and I will send you an OEM version of both but it will take some time simply because of the distance. Honestly - Try a local computer bits supplier - They usualy have the things coming out of their ears!

FT.
Audacity is a freeware sound recording and manipulation pogramme with a good reputation. It reckons to run from Win 98 onwards It also has versions for Mac and for Linux. It will record from an analogue source, but will also convert between different formats. It will also add effects (e.g. electric guitar pedal type effects) and do clever tricks such as altering the pitch without changing the overall tempo of a track. Another clever one allows you to remove the "middle" of a stereo recording (which is often the lead voice) so that you end up with a Karaoke type backing track of all the instruments which you can then sing along to without the original singer...
It doesn't seem to actually burn a CD, but will get your music into files ready for burning. You might then be able to use a time limited trial of a commercial burning prog such as Nero to get your stuff onto disc.
Quack!

OK - The latest Windows media player will do both 2 and 3 with rip and burn. I don't know if the latest is available for 98 though but you probably need to upgrade to XP soon anyway! For writing data I use Roxio or Nero. They are both commercial but most CD writers you buy will come with an OEM version of one or the other packaged for use. I am happy to send you a copy of mine but surely there is somone nearer to you or a friendly supplier nearby?

Cheers

I still run on 98SE...

1) drop files I want to archive/backup on a CD

2) build some mp3 CDs

3) build some playable music CDs...

Some conversions of formats including bit rates will be necessary for 3... and 2

As the Gnome says - define what you want the software to do and somebody may be able to suggest safe alternatives which will do the specific jobs.

Isn't cow rummaging illegal now, Richard? :-)

I find Windows Media Player and Real Player fine for playing and burning CDs etc. Exactly what is it you are trying to do Robin?

Cheers

I know the subject line looks like one of those clever BS thread puns, but I recently downloaded some sound SW - for CD Players and Burners, and some other stuff... titles below from which you can identify the progs...

Artisan_CD-DVD_BURNER3_3_3
AFreeRipper3_12_10
AFreeConverter2_5_23
ArtisanDVD-DivX_Player3_6_3
BitStormCD-DVD_Burner2_20
Clone2_CD-DVD+Burner6_5

and they all mention that they contain "Save" adware.

I obtained them from the same site where I got the latest version of Free Download Manager - are are all misleadingly labelled allegedly as "Freeware" - when they should all be titled "Adware"... The licence setup says that the progs won't work without the adware, and that it regularly spawns ads across the screen obtained from on line.

Does anybody know if (and where) you can get these progs (legally) as real Freeware, and without the adware crap? If not, any suggestions of similar Freeware stuff (Win98 vintage)... or if they are usable
with the ads -I would normally plan to use them all offline anyway...

Robin
