Metchosin,

You are correct. The same temperature effect occurs with tortoises and other reptiles.

Paul I know its chromosomes, although I didn't know it was reversed in reptiles. However, in some crocs etc. temperature of the incubating eggs will at times determine the sex of the offspring. Of that I am fairly certain.

From the point of view of the survival of the species, producing female babies would seem to be a better bet.

No, it's just the chromosomes. Reptiles (and birds) are the opposite of us in this respect. We are female if we have the sex chromosome pair XX, and male if XY (YY is I believe unknown).

In reptiles and birds the equivalent chromosome pair gives male if the same, female if different. In parthenogenisis, the YY pair doesn't produce a viable egg, but the XX pair eggs are viable, and all male.

Genetically, a normal human produced by parthenogenisis would be female, unless of course a miracle occurred.

I'm wondering if the fact that the embryos are male has something to do with the temperature at which the eggs were incubated. If I recall correctly, in some reptiles, such as crocs and alligators, the temperature within the "nest" has a direct effect on the sex off the hatchlings. High temperatures = males, lower temperatures = females....or was it the other way around?

Is a komodo a combination of a kimono and a commode? A bit like a cami- kazy?

Bee
I love Komodos too. I've got a Japanese silk one with a dragon embroidered on the back - I guess that's why they call them Komodo dragons?

Uncle Dave, Komodos are very odd that way: her parthenogenetic babies will be males. Scroll down to 'Parthenogenesis'.

I do love Komodos.

If the eggs hatch successfully, they will of course be females, so "Jesus" would not be an appropriate name. Unless there's a female version of that name around. I've never heard one.

"Jesusina"?

To think that we've known about Komodo Dragons for many years, but this ability of theirs is just being newly discovered. I find this fascinating for some reason. It's just amazing, the things we learn after we think we know so much. This is really cool news. And really odd too! That just enhances the enjoyment.
