I'm getting multiple reports, so not a hoax.

One tale I heard him tell: that his career got off the ground when, from Julliard, he was tasked do recitals of classical music on a goodwill tour of Russia. Then suddenly his first record started to chart so he cancelled and worked on promoting his record. The rest is history.

Many happy years hearing his hits in both eras.
