Subject: Lyr Req: 1920s–30s novelty/folk song From: GUEST,vigilanteman Date: 07 May 26 - 06:40 PM : I’m looking for a novelty/folk song my father used to sing (he was born 1918 and grew up in rural Millard County, Utah). Origin may be elsewhere or widely circulated. I only remember fragmentary lines (may be imperfect): FIRST VERSE “My daddy had an old gray mare…” “. . . which had a hippocampus a way down in his thorax.” “We shoved a stove pipe down his throat and filled it up with borax.” “He said ‘hold on this end while I blow on the on the other.’ The horse coughed back and ??????? and it almost killed poor father.” ANOTHER VERSE “One day a skunk came to our yard… pa thought it was a kitty. With two white stripes across his back…Pa thought it rather pretty. Pa said ‘I'd like to tame that cat if it isn't too much trouble.’ The skunk lifted its tail and let it fly and it almost killed poor father.” Likely sung in the 1920s–1930s; sounds like a comic/novelty or family parody verse. Any leads — lyrics, recordings, catalog numbers, or pointers to similar variants — would be greatly appreciated. |
