Subject: Lyr Add: In the Vale of Llangollen From: Nigel Parsons Date: 15 Nov 13 - 05:00 PM IN THE VALE OF LLANGOLLEN English words A.P.Graves In the vale of Llangollen the story runs still Of a hapless old harper who dwelt on the hill, Till his harp "bite and sup" could so seldom provide That in cold, cruel want and starvation he died. Yet his funeral feast was so plenteous a store 'Twould have kept him alive for a twelvemonth or more. His slighted harp vanished, yet oft, 'tis averred, On Glyn's mountain height its lone music is heard. The Marsh Goblin flashes his torch on the strings, As their old master strikes them and mournfully sings: "To God's famished poor carry comfort and cheer, If the harps of his angels you ever would hear!" Subject: RE: Lyr Add: In the Vale of Llangollen From: Nigel Parsons Date: 15 Nov 13 - 05:09 PM Posted in both English and Welsh. The source book for both is the same. The tune has been included in each post as there are slight differences in scansion, and the music (as printed) made allowances for that. Cheers Nigel |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: In the Vale of Llangollen From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 15 Nov 13 - 09:18 PM Thanks, Nigel. I listened to the tune after converting it to MIDI at the mandolin tab site. It's a good song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: In the Vale of Llangollen From: Nigel Parsons Date: 16 Nov 13 - 06:32 AM Thanks, I tried a couple of searches, but couldn't find it elsewhere, so I thought of the "Bank of Mudcat": Invest a little time to deposit lyrics or tunes here, and they will be safe deposited until you want them again. If you get a little interest then that's a bonus :) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: In the Vale of Llangollen From: GUEST Date: 24 Mar 25 - 04:45 AM Good Morning, I'm very late to this thread but hopefully you still check in every now and again, I sang this as an 11 Yr old for a school eistedfodd; now 42 years later going to attempt it again!! Do you have a clean score / sheet music the only one I can find is https://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/national-songbook/national-songbook%20-%200288.htm when I try to print it is almost unusable. I'd really appreciate it and thanks for your time Neil |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: In the Vale of Llangollen From: GUEST,Ed Date: 24 Mar 25 - 12:10 PM GUEST, The tune that Nigel posted is in ABC format. If you copy and paste your preferred version into an ABC converter such as this one: maryanahata.co.uk/abcviewer.php you will be able to save and print a high quality pdf file. Hope that helps |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: In the Vale of Llangollen From: sian, west wales Date: 25 Mar 25 - 05:57 PM IIRC the TUNE is Y Grisial Grwnd - The Crystal Ground - a harp tune in the 1778 collection of tunes of Anglesey fiddler Morris Edwards. I thought it might be in Edward Jones' "Musical and Poetical Relicks of the Welsh Bards" as he republished a lot of stuff from Edwards' collection but I don't see it on a quick look. (Available on Google Books.) sian |
