Subject: BS: The Flower Fairies (books)

My missus's granny gave her two books when she was a little girl and we just came across them whilst rummaging in the attic, "The book of the flower fairies" and "Fairies of the flowers and trees" by Cicely M. Barker.

The illustrations are wonderful and each poem/song has its own, then blank pages before the next.

Can anyone give us any information on who, when, where etc.

These were printed by Blackie and Son Limited, Glasgow, Bombay, and Toronto, how diverse is that?

Cicely Mary Barker lived in England and spent a great deal of her life in solitary pursuits owing to ill health. Because she had so much time, she entertained herself by drawing and painting. Her favourite subjects were the many flowers, plants and trees of the English countryside, and all the fairies who lived there.

Here is the website, it takes a while to load, but will give you lots of info about Cicely Mary Barker and her many books and illustrations:

There are also a number of other related sites, if you put her name into your search engine!

best wishes

freda

The Book of the flower fairies do you read German? Bookfinder has it from $149 to $732

Fairies of the flowers and trees looks like this is an expensive book. Bookfinder has prices from $255 to $879

The reason for the locations of Glasgow & Bombay relate directly to the days of British colonial rule, with the third Toronto due to the large Scottish population in Canada at that time.
Blackie & Son appeared to publish nearly every one of my school books, in those far off days when I went to school, they were a sort of Scottish institution, and a source of great pride to many Scots, and particularly to Glaswegians like myself.

They are still very popular today; the FFs have taken on a life of their own, through merchandising.

If your missus still has her granny's childhood copies, they are treasures!

This is a link to Advanced Book Exchange. I see my links on the right side of each line above expired, but just enter the title in and that's enough to bring up the prices, etc.
