For a rare live appearance of a songwriter whose songs you sing at festiavls without realising it.

Long awaited CD just out.

The singing will be awesome.

And Mike Sparks, "Zorg", Mary O'Connor (back from her flutter in France), "Hovering Bob", "Moses", "Singing Ref"....

Les is particularly appreciated at Herga, both as a lovely bloke and a great songwriter. Most Herga singers have at least one Les Sullivan song in their repertoire ("Moses" is going for the record, I think). Johnny Collins has recorded at least one of Les' songs (Jutland).

I always enjoy listening to Les live. He has such obvious conviction and warmth in his performance that he carries you with him. I expect to be misty eyed during the "Ballad of Tubby Clayton" and "Sullivan's Letter"... And "Natasha"... And "Roses of No Man's Land"... And I expect to belting out insanely during "Five Pounds". And "Deadeye Sound" - or "Hard On" as we have affectionately subtitled it.

Work v hectic at the moment, but yes I am aiming to get to Herga on Monday! We might even have a practice at Banbury this weekend, once Les has returned from his diving week in Sharm-el-Sheikh, and after (possibly during) the Catters gathering in the Reindeer!

Well, I had a great time this evening (yes, I did actually make it to the Royal Oak, Peel Road, Wealdstone, and was very relieved to find I could still sing after Banbury). Thanks to the Catters who came, including Zorg, El Greko, El Inglese, Moses, Breezy, Trayton, Leadfingers and Guest Frogette.

Yes ,it was a first rate evening, Kitty and Les gave us a very good show, very effective guitar accompaniment and haunting harmonies to highlight the intensity that Les puts into every one of his performances.

And they sound just as good on CD

Congrats to all concerned with this project

Les is booked in for Fri 11th Feb at the Windward, St Albans Folk-song club.

So, it was a Hayes-ite who left the spot on the floor eh? Must have a leaking sump on the squeeze box.

Thoroughly good night from everyone who performed, with Herga's usual high standard of chorus singing to the fore. Hadn't been there for a while and left wondering why not. Must gird my loins more often on a Monday night, particularly when it's a mini Mudcat gathering.

Drove home playing the CD, my car system can't cope with Mr Collins.

Well done Les, it was worth the hole in the deck!

Roman name for Harrow I think
herga is the name of the local River which runs through this part of North West London, after which the Folk Club takes its name
A Folk club is a gathering of like minded people who enjoy folk song or music or dance

I didn't think it is something personal. I thought that maybe it can clarify what Herga means, or from where it comes from. I always wanted to know what my surname means, but I never could find out anything about it.
It's really interesting that it's roman.
I'm from Croatia, and that's my grandmothers maiden name. She thougth it's a name of german origin.
I don't know anything about it really.

The name Herga derives from the Old English (Anglo Saxon) hearg which meant a place of worship/shrine/temple. Modern place names Harrow usually come from this. Harrow in Middlesex (the place referred to here, home of the Herga Folk Club in NW London) was at one time Gumeningas Herga , meaning the worship place of either a man called Gumeninga or a tribe called the Gumeningas. (IIRC). (So the root is Germanic rather than Latin).

Ivan Herga:- If you ever come to England, be sure to look us up in our "home" at the Royal Oak Public House, Peel Road, Harrow Weald. Every Monday night from 8.30pm (except bank holidays). We've been there over 40 years (in my case, with a break of 30 years in the middle) and claim to be the "oldest" British Folk Club meeting at the same venue. You would be most welcome.

There is a Herga website - I don't know how to do links but type "Herga Folk Club" into any search-engine and I'm sure you'll find us (Site is maintained by our own "El Greco")
