Speaking with a friend this evening. Verl Smith was at one time--and may still be--associated with the Montana Freemen. He was sent to jail on a federal charge. However, his name, which when googled years back would bring up literally hundreds of site now brings up bupkis. My politics are not in line with his, but when people just disappear from public view in that manner, it makes me wonder who has the power to do that and why would they exercise that power. Does anyone have any ideas?

That really is odd, Brucie.

I have no idea. Someone at Google would be able to filter it, but why the hell would they?

Odd indeed, brucie, since I did a Google search on "Verl Smith" and got 283 hits. A search on "montana freemen" turned up 3,770 hits, including this bit taken from the Seattle Times, 3/17/99:

[LeRoy] Schweitzer was convicted on 25 counts of conspiracy, bank fraud, threatening a federal judge, illegal possession of firearms and participating in the armed robbery of an ABC-TV crew covering the Freemen.

The judge sentenced Daniel Petersen Jr., probably the No. 2 man in the Freeman hierarchy, to 15 years in prison and ordered him to pay restitution of $39,845.

Rodney Skurdal, 46; and John McGuire, 61, were also sentenced to 15 years. Dale Jacobi, 57, a former Canadian police officer, received 13 years; Richard Clark, 12 years; and William Stanton, three years.

Agnes Stanton, Stanton's wife, and Cherlyn Petersen, Petersen's wife, were sentenced to time served and released.

Are you sure that Verl Smith was among them? The Verl search turned up a bunch of folks, including a science teacher, but I didn't see any connection to the Montana Freemen.

That's just it, Rap and Amos. I am not sure that he was ever a 'member' of the Freemen, but there was an association. No search turns up both names together. Also, I think Mr Smith was jailed and there isn't even a record anywhere of his arrest, conviction, etc. No remnant news stories. Strange.

PS,

Rapper, I know this will be of interest to you because Verl Smith is interested in guns and bullets. He has produced a lubricant that provides the 'fastest' exit from the barrel--beats anything on the market. My buddy who told me about Mr Smith is a gun collector, and he has in the past had conversations with Verl in that context and regard. I understand that Verl has shot down some positions in various gun magazines to do with the worth of various products.

I think his jailing was in relation ot him having started his own currency. As I understand it, when Mr Smith was jailed, the Freemen took over his shop and operated it for him so that Verl's missus had a means of income while he was incarcerated. It irks me that there are only four sites that mention him in relation to guns/ammunition, and none concerning his arrest, trial, etc. I am beginning to think it's real easy to make people disappear, even in America.
