Subject: NorEast Blizzard? Batten down & check in
From: katlaughing
Date: 05 Mar 01 - 12:48 AM

I've heard dire predictions of a blizzard in the Northeast (US) over the next day or two and am hoping everyone stays safe AND that the power stays on at Mudcat Central, as Pennsylvania was included in the warnings!

My daughter, who lives on the shoreline of CT, said they were telling everyone to stay home tomorrow, not to even try to venture out and there are supposed to be extra big waves, too.

So, all you Mudcatters in Yankee Land, let us know how you fare, okay?! Stay warm, stay in, and have fun playing music with a toasty fire and hot chocolate or warm brandy or, well...whatever your pleasure!

Snow? Yepp-er, lots. Our daughter had her first real snow-driving practice, home from work, early thank God.

Its already snowing hard here in Central VT. They're predicting 18 to 25 inches locally, a prediction I have not heard in some years. WHEEEEEE.

Snowing very hard here (West side of Vermont, just south of halfway up); but hasn't been for very long. Schools are cancelled, but Rutland City, which always tries to out-macho the surrounding towns, waited until the last moment, causing great confusion among the teachers living outside the city, which group includes my wife.

Weather says the storm track, which was supposed to pass us to the south, has turned more northerly than previously expected, and predicted amounts here run the gamut from 8 inches to 2.5 feet.

I'm supposed to moderate the Town Meeting tonight. I'm not sure they can postpone it, since the date's set by statute. It's no problem for me, it's a half mile from my house, and I can x-c ski there if it comes to that. But it may be lonesome.

Peter

eighteen inches here on the hill, though the official count is only 10 inches at the local airport (We always get more) - just waded out to the barn and fed the horse and burro. The burro has sense and stayed in his stall - the gelding was running around the pasture - icicles hanging off him like knight's barding. The Malamute is in sseventh heaven - but the cats have settled down in their basket for a long winter's nap.

Only an inch or two with some freezing rain so far in central NJ. Still predicting a foot.

Packing my bags today. Heading for Florida Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on how much snow we have to dig out of.

Just an inch or two here (50 miles north of NYC) so far, and nothing falling currently, but still the dire predictions for later today... hey, Sinsull, I went to the beach at Jacob Riis park yesterday morning just for fun, to see if we could see the snow moving in from afar, but mostly it was just cold and windy! from sunny and snow-free Wyoming,

This is Main St in Concord, NH.
Here's Pow Wow Pond, in southern NH. Watch the birdies. (Yeah, right!)
Or here's an infrared camera
with a different view of the same pond.

And now it's getting windy. I don't normally lose power unless it's windy, so if I disappear for a while, that's why. Got oil lamps, got candles, got a fireplace and a good book.

Jeri, that's fantastic! My old home town, I can see it whenever I want! That picture is taken from above the state house frontage, about a half a block from the church where I was married.
It has stopped snowing completely here in Keene (southwestern NH)but the afternoon/evening predictions are as dire as those mentioned above. We seem to be in the area for deepest snow predicted- up to 36"!My spouse works in Brattleboro, VT- he took a change of clothes to work today in case he decides not to try to come home. And we have no school, after a week off- we'll still be in classes in July at this rate.
BUT- the wood pile is in, the house is cozy, and yes, kat, I have chocolate!!

FILMCLIP FROM LAST NIGHT:
Susan to daughter home for spring break: "Just so you know, you can feel free to make as many sugar cookies as you wish... don't forget to put the strawberry jam on them while they're still warm... [motherly yada yada yada].... or maybe a pizza pan size cookie...."

Daughter: "Pizza pan does NOT work, how many time do I have to tell you that! That needs a different recipe, SHORTBREAD."

All fall silent as memories of shortbread take over the slight amount of operant brain space remaining.

LIVE REPORT:
"Road? Sure there's a road. The oil truck just weased on by, and so did Schwan's frozen food delivery truck. There must be a road. No I can't SEE any road-- have a little faith!"

"Oh look!!! Well, those evergreens needed pruning anyhow."

Ruby the Dog, just after her rocket-launching autopilot has propelled her off the dogporch steps into the morning: "Waidaminnit! You want me to WHAT?"

I think we've had about 8" since last night. It's not snowing that hard, but it is steady. Almost everyone who lives within 30 miles came to work this morning, but one person has already left, several plan to work through lunch & leave early. I suspect more will decide to go as the day progresses. My car had to go into the shop for 3 days of body work so I was out early to get it in, and get back before it's too bad. I only hope enough mechanics can get in to get the work done. The forecast for us is 18-24 inches total by tomorrow. Another forecast said up to 3' for the area Binghamton-Utica, NY, but 2' north of there. Being 5 miles from Utica, I don't know what to really expect.

I work at a residential college, so it never really closes. The students do need to eat & if thier profs. are snowed in they can always come to the library, so I suspect we'll be open for the duration. I walk to work so its not a problem for me. I can go buy food in the dining halls as well. I already have a bunking request from one late night worker.

Only 2" so far here, but it's steady and we only started around dawn. Yes school is closed, much to the disappointment of Axel, my exchange-student son. He was hoping to be bothered by someone else than my youngest (age 9, almost). The cat is out for the 4th time (he loves the snow), the lambs are playing King-of-the-Hill, and I have to meet with the select board tonight before town meeting tomorrow(4 miles). Dave is supposed to fly out of Manchester NH tomorrow. We'll see. Meanwhile I have lots of wood, candles, Kerosene, popcorn, AND CHOCOLATE! At leastit's not rain, and I can't stay grumpy when there's snow!

Grumpy today. Dad is in the hospital with an infected knee. He had knee replacements done several months ago with no problems. And he isn't saying how it happened. At least my brother got him to the hospital before the storm hit. What is it with you men? When something hurts, get it checked! Do not wait for gangrene to set in before consulting a doctor. It started snowing in Brunswick, Maine, about 10:00 AM today. It snowed heavily for an hour or so and then slacked off. Currently it is light snow with no discernable wind but the weather radar shows quite a pile on its way. Some people have already left work and others are waiting for the base to close. We all expect to be able to stay home tomorrow. I'll hang in here until closing time.

I have candles, kerosene lamps and hot chocolate. I have no back up heat, though. I am not worried because I am on the same power grid as the local hospital.

Well, I just came back from a trip to the local "corner" store for some much needed survival supplies - chocolate ice cream, a chocolate bar, milk for hot chocolate and potato chips. (No, I am not joking.) The guy at the store was saying how the storm was just a false alarm and it was over. Having just seen a weather report, I laughed maniacally for a while. When I regained composure, I told him they were saying the blizzard was supposed to start around 6 or 7 tonight. Two inches of snow per hour, 35 mph winds, and get this - between 1 and 3 feet of snow. THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW MANY FEET WERE GOING TO GET!!! But I have chocolate.

I don't know what it's like today, but last night, they (Weather Channel) were saying that parts of the coast were treating the storm as a hurricaine, and were talking evacuation. They were showing live film of Sea Bright NJ at the time. That's just down the road from where annamill now lives. (And also where she used to live.)

It quit here about 11:00 but looks like it's starting up again. The newspaper web page says the blizzard warning is off but still close to 2' total of snow. Not a blizzard because winds are not expected to get as high originally predicted.

SINSULL you really are in a bad mood aren't you. I just suggested you go to the link if you needed a break, I didn't suggest you pack up and move here, its true the occasional shaking can be unnerving.

My thermometer says its 72F, but it lies because the sun is hitting it directly now. Just to remind all of you how quickly things can change, we had about 6 inches three weeks ago and now my snowdrops, violets and polyanthus are up and blooming and the birds are singing, I can empathize though, in 1997, our last real blizzard, we had between 4 and 5 feet of snow here. There is a reason they call this the wetcoast and when that wetness is combined with cold temperatures its not pleasant either, the stuff can really pile up. No power or water for 4 days from that one.

here in Boston: mostly rain and sleet. No doubt tot he west there is a lot fo snow. It is all suuposed to hit hard tonight (course they said that last night). In the city we have about two inches; very wet and slushy. Ten inches by morning, twenty by tomorrow night. They closed all the school today even though the weather was not at all severe...panic. Just like panic made everyone buy all the bread and milk at the local grovery stores...

Me I am planning to settle in with my kitties in front of the fire and read...

Not a whole lot of snow here in Gloucester, no Pefect Storm this time, but the wind is threatening the plastic on the windows and the dog looks like he's going to hold it 'till Wednesday. Think I'll strap a bucket to him, the wimp. He doesn't even squat. We're supposed to get 18"-24". That's just to get us to go buy all the milk and bread we can eat for a week. I went to the store this morning and there was no milk and no bread. Is that the food of choice for a storm? Am I missing something? Someone please enlighten me. David.

Haven't you heard? This one is going to be the "Storm of the Century" with a worse one to hit Friday. I have many half loaves of bread I was saving for the birds that I can send you if you are out. Should be a good sea tomorrow morning. I hope you got your boat around behind the breakwater.

Suffolk County, Long Island, about 50 miles east of Manhattan - right now it's snowing but it rained most of the day AFTER they'd closed the schools and caused all kinds of havoc in people's lives. First we were getting two feet, then 12"-18", then around a foot, now they're predicting 4"-8" overnight which will mean another snow day tomorrow. Sometimes I think all this overkill about the weather is due to the Weather Channel and the other all-the-time news networks needing something to talk about constantly. They've been issuing warnings now for about 48 hours and, as yet, the ground is barely covered. So much for modern meteorology. Ray

One time, right after we'd moved back to Wyoming, from Connecticut, our daughter, left behind in CT (her choice!), called us to see how we were making out in the big blizzard. She'd been watching the weather channel which said we had a foot of snow and more coming. I laughed out loud and almost looked for a phone number for TWC. As I looked out my window talking to her, all I could see and had seen for many days was barren, brown, windswept prairie, sunshine and not a cloud or drop of snow in sight!

Out here, it's water and whiskey and beer that sell out...**bg**

From Dutchess Co.N.Y. So far we've gotten about 7 inches Five of which I shoveled off this am. Then the little extortionists with their shovels on their backs descended into the neighborhood. They gleefully inform me they"d love to shovel the last 2 inches. One hitch tho' the price has doubled. WE are supposed to get 26 to 30 inches before it is over. I guess I'll take out a loan to pay the little buggers off. No chocolate in the house! Maybe I'll end it all. Slainte Maithe.

Well, I've been there, so I'm not going to gloat. Back when I was a rent-a-doc, I spent a month working in Topsham, Maine, just across the river from Naemanson. One night (I think it was December 1989) it snowed so hard that Gordon Bok had to cancel a concert in Blue Hill. I drove all the way up from Freeport to see him, but by the time the concert started he couldn't make it in from Camden. I also worked two weeks in Gloucester, and even spent a week way up in Presque Isle. I lived near Springfield, Mass., in the mid-80s, and my sister lives in Lexington. So I'm real familiar with New England storms, and I hope this is an easy one. I also know how reliable the weather services can be. Last November when Hilo got 29 inches of rain in 24 hours the morning forecast was for "brief morning showers"!

Aloha,
Mark

is that why Ben and Jerry's was on sale this week at the grocery store??? (But whenever it goes on sale they only have about four flavors and three fo them are Cherry Garcia). I snagged a pint of vanilla and one of chocolate chip cookie dough; in case of, you know, emergency...

My fave B&J flavors: Doonesbury Sorbet, Vanilla Fudge Caramel

We are getting real snow now. But I am shocked at how the local news programs have been saturated with coverage: correspondents in every town, detailing every stupid thing we already know...I mean it is just a snowstorm for pete's sake! Just because they underpredicted the 1978 storm (which admittedly did strand a lot of people) MUST they make such a fuss of every major storm for the next fifty years?

No school again today- my favorite measuring instrument is my neighbor's popup camper, hibernating in the strip between our houses, sheltered from winds but exposed to snow. I estimate at least 24" covering it right now; there's a break in the snowfall but "they" keep saying it isn't over yet. As I went to bed at 10:30 last night my neighbor was plying his snowblower- when I looked out the window this morning, the huge mountain left by the plow at the foot of my driveway was gone!!! I'm out of chocolate chips, so he's getting oatmeal raisin this time...

After a great deal of dithering on the part of the Town Fathers (and Mothers), we (Pittsford) held the "open" part of our Town Meeting on schedule Monday night.

I am the Moderator, and I had to Moderate with a head cold, which I wasn't looking forward to.

To everyone's surprise, we had a good crowd - although more than half scrammed after the Town meeting, in the break prior to the School District meeting.

The nice thing was that everyone wanted to get home soon, so all but a few of the blabbermouths kept quiet, and we got done at a relatively decent hour.

Something in excess of a foot on the ground here now, and still snowing.

It's hard to tell how much has actually fallen because it's drifting. I shoveled a foot path to the road and quit for a while. There was at least 2 feet of snow. Came inside, got my coffee and got on line and heard one of my nice neighbors plowing the bit behind my car. I don't mind the wind (or the rolling sea...stop it!) because it keeps the stuff from building up on my roof. Also, my car's pretty well cleaned off.

My mailbox, which a snow plow had severely wounded during the last snowstorm, died during the night and is now buried somewhere after falling off its pole. Oh well - something tells me I won't be getting mail today anyway.

Very little snow here. The car was a little difficult to clean off yesterday because it was icy snow. Then it seemed the wipers wouldn't work, so I called out from my job. Later they DID work--go figger?!!!

Today it's very windy. I just looked out my door to give you an up the minute report and saw a kid's playball being pushed UP the hill very steadily by the wind!

Unless things changed drastically, there should be no problem getting to Mudcatville tonight for the radio show. There may be up to three guests, two of whom have not been on the show before, so I hope you enjoy it.

The roads have been a mess & we've shovelled several times & our backs hurt, but we've probably only had about a foot of snow, total, so far. It's been nasty shovelling, though--ice-crusted or slush-heavy. The snow days have allowed me to catch up on life, but I'm surely looking forward to spring. Did try a new tune on the autoharp yesterday, since I had some extra time! :)

I shovelled about 4 more inches after I wrote the last message. I'm very tempted to shove something in the front yard to see how deep the total accumulation is, if I can get over or through the drifts and plow leavings. I've seen a couple SUVs, truck with plows and some idiot in a car go by. Also, some people have been going up and down the street on snowmobiles. I'd be having a ball if I had some X-country skis.

I did manage to squeeze in some x-country skiing before the trail was disrupted by people walking their dogs and trampling over the groove set by others skiers. Since the snow is falling lightly all day there may be another x-country opportunity in the early morning hours. Fortunately there are four good spots around here for skiing. Work has been canceled for two days at the shipyard. This is a first for General Dynamics. I just looked outside and all the dirty snow is white again. Hard to tell how much we got in this storm. The weatherman on TV says over two feet, but it's hard to say looking at snowdrifts. Weathermen have been known to stretch the truth or ignore it altogether. Since my accident I contracted the kid next door to shovel me out. He shoveled me out twice today and a younger kid from across the street, who wants the contract, shoveled me out again. I will have to shovel out yet again tomorrow by myself when all the kids go back to school. I would judge by the amount of money I owe the neighborhood kids for this storm that it lived up to all my expectations.

Gee Mary, by and large Vermonters get the parsiflage when it flies around. New Hampshirites, though... (actually most of them do too, but some of them, oh my!) We had one who was jumping up and down about spending GRANT money on renovating our old RR Station. Thought it was Gov Dean's way of making us provide bathrooms for the folks on I-91. I think it was Take Back Vermont trying to make trouble. Kinda pathetic. Of course Den Farmer, one of the sharpest folks in town, (reads the entire report and can speak intelligently and eloquently on almost any subject therein) was having a wonderful time voting against everything, just for jollies. Luckily I got my tongue working before I had to explain the item where we vote on how much of the budget is to be raised by taxes. And they even reelected me to the budget committee. Hooray for democracy!

Well, late Tuesday night, and most of the snow has stopped. I'm down in Seacoast New Hampshire, near Jeri, Bat Goddess, and others. I must have about 8-10" of new snow. I live on a private road which has been plowed at least once, and the folks with SUVs are getting in and out. I figure I'll go out and shovel out my car tomorrow, and get into town.

Since I spent most of my youth in NH, I made sure that my current place had gas heat and hot water, and I keep candles and lamps around, but have not needed them during this storm. Lots of non-perishable food on hand, including the makings for hot chocolate, and I usually keep jugs of water in case the power dies, so the pump won't run.

The nice thing about storms like this is the peace and quiet. Even the snow mobiles have called it quits, so all we can hear is whatever wind blows, and the occasional clump of snow falling.

Amergin, see if you're gloating when the sun disappears for a month...

I remember when I lived in Seattle, somebody asked the mayor what the city's emergency plan was for the big snowstorm that was forecast, and he replied, "It's not going to snow." So the commentator said, "Yes, I understand, but what is the emergency plan?" "It's not going to snow." Well, it did, and all six of the city's snowplows were very busy. It was then that everybody realized just how many damn hills there are in that city.

Well, we just finished digging ourselves out of at least 12 inches of new snow, here in the Upper Kennebec Valley. The tenants in the building all cooperated in digging their cars out and making use of the escape driveway so the snowplower could come back and polish off the job. I've finished shoveling out the walks and reparking cars for those who are not working today. The home cats, Tilahun and Tejitu, checked out the front porch, lashed their bushy tails, and were last seen curled up on the window seat in the office. The neighbor's big tiger cat, Gashay, finally put in an appearance for brunch; we had't seen him yesterday and were beginning to worry – he's such an incredible eating machine. I'm not sure where we're gonna put the snow from the next storm expecting friday and saturday. There's just no room. Maybe we can ship it off to Alohaland; our town used to do stuff like that back in the early 1900's. We'd ship blocks of Kennebec river ice (insulated with sawdust) all over the world, even to China and India. Wonder if they used shanties to help with loading the ice blocks?

Update from Rhode Island: slick-soled motorcycle boots are of little use in ice and snow; if there's half a tree lying in the garden it is not because the Branch Fairy has been by; the dog, who does not trust you anyway, believes you have a switch on the wall, like the one that turns the outside light on and off, for this white falling nonsense, and are only letting it continue in order to plague him. He has left his opinion on the porch and you will discover it as the thaw arrives.

Hello everyone from the Sea Bright, NJ area. It wasn't bad except for some flooding. I've spent the last three days on my couch with my Maxie and a warm fireplace, wine and about a hunnert DVD's. Honey's in Monterey, Cali, surfing. He called me yesterday and told me he had spent the whole day in the water. Brat!

On Sunday, we had 3 ft high whitewater on my beautiful river. The waves came up and crashed up against the bulkhead and jumped up to our deck. Awesome!

Then it started to snow.... large flakes coming down very fast, but not really sticking.

It's been a pleasant weekend.

Honey comes home Monday. Can't wait. Miss 'em.

Our windows here in the office are all covered with snow. They are not low windows but most of the snow covering them slid from the pitched metal roof. No view and very diffused light until it melts back. We have one back door that is buried with four feet of snow blocking it. The Fire Department is not amused.

I couldn't take it anymore. Yesterday, I dug out some peat pots and shoved some red sage seeds in. They're in a sunny basement window. Today I tried some rosemary.

It's snowed every Fri night I can remember. So far, they're only saying "snow showers." It had better be - I've run out of places to dump the stuff I shovel. The piles are about 5' high now! If I put a little bit more up there and found a roof, I'd have a garage.

Just finished digging out both cars, and I'm grabbing a little Mudcat time before changing clothes and heading out for work. (45 minutes away) Missed 2 nights of work thanks to the storm(s) with only the possibility of making up 1 night. I'm wiped right now, but fighting with a computer for 8 hours will be relaxing compared to shoveling the cars out (and shoveling a path up the driveway to get to them).

Managed to walk up to the neighbors' yesterday afternoon in the thick of it. Up to my knees most of the way (only up to my calf in the lower part of the driveway), but up to my waist by the road. That was fun.

The weather has totally screwed up my car search and the coordination dance between the insurance check (inadequate, of course) and the rental car the insurance company is paying for. I'll just feel a lot more relaxed when I find reliable transportation (which I have to before the weekend). Ah well. Sorry for whining.

Sinsull, you're right of course. I didn't last long at the profession. I taught Jr High for a couple of years before I cracked. Since then I have been an auto mechanic, furniture refinisher, Human Services administrator, chef, teacher of guitar, banjo, and mandolin, repairer of same, and have worked at several music stores (which is what I'm doing for a living now, such as it is.) I am clearly a most accomplished jackoff-of-all-trades.

Couple of years? I lasted one semester. Taught ancient Greek to a crowd of freshman. Front row, center - two orange-robed, face-painted Hari Krishnas who OLMed during class. At 23 I was living for retirement and moved on.

Now they are back to predicting another storm for Friday and Saturday. No one is listening. Don Imus refused to let the weatherman do his report. "Who needs him?" BUT we had a few hours of sunshine. I loitered on the sidewalk outside the office for a half hour and feel so much better.

Batgoddess, haven't seen you here in a while. How are you and the Curmudgeon?

Just checking in from Cape Cod. Minimal snow amounts..(sent it all to New Hampshire). High winds and 30 foot seas were a problem last night....I haven't heard yet if the flood tides broke through any of the sand "spits" and dunes that protect our natural resources here. Heard today that people a bit north of here (in Winthrop. Mass.) were picking up lobsters (and boulders)from the street after this morning's high tide. In defense of the weathermen's forecasting this storm.....yes..I agree they got overly "jubilant" in their tone during the broadcasts....but in their profession.....a storm this difficult to forecast (two systems etc.) and predict a future path....rarely happens to this magnitude. I think they get excited just as much as a musician finally mastering a good song and getting ready to "perform" it would. Personally, I'm thankful they covered it as well as they did. Although the storm hit here some 12-24 hours later than predicted, ALL of our fishing fleets made it to inner harbors and were safe. AND our Coast Guard received NO emergency rescue calls throughout the storm. Seems to me they're "damned if they do and damned if they don't." When a life is lost at sea here.....due to foul weather...the first question asked is "Why wasn't a storm warning issued?" (Done ranting now...)

Good, good points, Jackie. So glad to know you are safe and sound. If they didn't overprdict, as you say, some idiot might go out and get lost at sea, then our Dave the Ancient Mariner and others would have to risk their lives to rescue them.

Poor ol' weathermen, really take a beating either way, eh? **BG**

Four more days til Honey comes home... I really miss him. SINSULL, the swans are wonderful and feeling playful. I dread that soon they will take off for colder climes. This is probably the only thing I'll regret about winter leaving. More snow this weekend?? Oh well, we've had years of mild winters. Payback's a bitch, huh? As long as it doesn't keep Honey from me on Monday.

Have a good day my friends.

Love, annamill
