Now, this thread really belongs to Kendall, because in the 'Middle Age Dating' thread, he mentioned those sultry words of Anthony Quinn's, when as Zorba, he said...

"There is only one sin that the Gods will not forgive. If a woman calls a man to her bed, and he won't go. That, they will not forgive."

..and suddenly, I was away with the faeries, under a beautiful blue sky, the waves lapping around me, and Zorba's smile lit up his face, as I said to him.....

Teach me to dance, will you?

But then...when we'd finished dancing... ;0)

I wonder whether we should be putting together a Morris version of it too, the bells would add to the rhythm, and I can think of a few good moves with the sticks too.

I've seen that one before, but had forgotten it, Lizzie, thanks for the link. I love it!! Lionel, the lead kid in the front-centre, doesn't look as though he has a bone in his body!

Once you become familiar with Oz Aboriginal ceremonial practices, Dead Horse, I suspect you'd realise Morris' "Blacking up" has a completely different ethnographic background from the Yolngu use of white.

And I managed to post that comment and avoid a swag of awful puns.

I suspect the off-white used in aboriginal rituals is likely obtained from the ashes from burnt wood.
The black used in ancient British rituals is derived from the same source.
The application of this ash gives the wearer some of the magic associated with fire.
The very idea that blacking up or whiting up is in any way racist is obviously a load of old boot menders.
My post was, I hope you realise, decidedly tongue in cheek.
Back to subject, those young dancers certainly had a ball doing the Greek thing.
Now lets see some Maoris performing a Hakka(sp?) in the style of Zorba!

I sent this to my son in law a while back - he loved it and sent it to all his friends (he's a Greek Australian). Here they are performing at the Sydney festival last week in Martin Place.

Now how about other variations on the Zorba dance? I offer some examples:

Zorba the Grieg (Norwegian)
Zorba the Leek (Welsh)
Sorba the Peke (in canine or Chinese versions)
Zorba the Sheikh (more flowing movements, no raising of legs, specially adapted for sandy dance floors)
Zorba the Geek (techno-syrtaki)
Zorba the Shriek (with "Shout"-type masks)
Zorba the Weak (sitting-down version)
Zorba the Peek or Zorba the Brick (to be danced with specially cut trousers, low-slung at the back)
Zorba the Cheek (for when the trousers drop too much)
Zorba the Streak (finally discarding the trousers)
Zorba the Leak (older man's version)
Zorba the Reek (similar to the above)
