Subject: Lyr Req: Shepherd's Market From: GUEST,Jean Date: 22 Nov 10 - 05:41 PM I learnt this at school but can only remember two lines. If you'll come along with me to Shepherd's Market' I will buy a bunch of Lilies/ribbons for your hair. T realise its a forlorn hope, but someone out there with a better memory may have learnt it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Shepherd's Market From: ClaireBear Date: 22 Nov 10 - 06:22 PM Guest, Jean, it's an Eleanor Farjeon poem. I found a snippet at this site, but can't copy-paste it as it's Flash content, so you'll have to go there for it. Good luck finding more of it! Claire |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Shepherd's Market From: ClaireBear Date: 22 Nov 10 - 06:56 PM Found the source poem somewhere I could grab it: Will you go along with me to Shepherd Market? It's there they hold the merriest Fair in May. Will you go along with me to Shepherd Market In a pair of red-heeled slippers very gay? I'll pick a bunch of cowslips for your bodice, And I'll tie a yellow ribbon in your hair, If you'll go along with me to shepherd Market And dance me round the Maypole at May-Fair. - Eleanor Farjeon, ca. 1916 (specific source not cited) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Shepherd's Market From: Jim Dixon Date: 23 Nov 10 - 09:07 AM This was at least published in the right year: Nursery Rhymes of London Town by Eleanor Farjeon (London: Duckworth & Co., 1916) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Shepherd's Market From: GUEST,Guest Jean Date: 23 Nov 10 - 06:01 PM Thank you so much ClairBear, its been niggling away at me for years. As I'm 70 that's quite a few years. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Shepherd Market From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 23 Nov 10 - 10:05 PM First published as sheet music in a volume of 11 songs, 1912. Book 3, "Nursery Rhymes of London Town," Anglo-French Music Company. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Shepherd Market From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 24 Nov 10 - 11:31 AM And you lucky UK residents can buy it from Amazon UK for .31 At least, that's what I found when I typed 'Nursery Rhymes of London Town' in the Google advanced search. For .31 I'd buy it just to get the tunes. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Shepherd Market From: Jim Dixon Date: 24 Nov 10 - 01:29 PM I once bought a used book from Goodwill (I think, or maybe Salvation Army) through Amazon for $.00 or maybe $.01. They do this because Amazon allows them to add a "postage and handling" charge, and that alone allows them to make a profit. The books, after all, are donated. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Shepherd Market From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 24 Nov 10 - 02:23 PM Even with the postage from UK, "Nursery Rhymes..." by Farjeon is reasonable. I get books and CDs from UK fairly often; the postage charge is low. |
