Subject: Acoustic blues show on Facebook Live From: GUEST,MandolinPaul Date: 09 Jun 20 - 11:36 AM Hey, y'all. On Wednesday night, I'll be doing another Facebook Live show, singing and playing some acoustic blues on mandolin and banjos. This will be the fifth show in a series that I've done since isolation. The show starts at 8pm eastern time. You don't have to be my Facebook friend to watch. Here's the link to the show: https://www.facebook.com/events/552098842132237 If you want to see a sample of my playing beforehand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8t4cJLGca1s |

Subject: RE: Acoustic blues show on Facebook Live From: GUEST,MandolinPaul Date: 09 Jun 20 - 10:10 PM I do. :) I’ve taken an old blues, come u with a different variation/arrangement to work on a non-standard instrument, but kept the feel, chord structure, melody, and timing of acoustic blues. Bits of the first few bars of each verse are lifted pretty directly from Robert Johnson's 32-20 Blues. Is it because I’m playing it on a tenor banjo that you’re questioning? |
Subject: RE: Acoustic blues show on Facebook Live From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 10 Jun 20 - 06:07 AM "Kept the feel, chord structure melody and timing of acoustic blues" I have trouble with that. Can I suggest that you put up Muddy's original recording which was not acoustic but heavily amplified and follow it with your version and point out the similarities. I am not criticising your singing/playing. Just the fact of how you describe it. BLUES it ain't. |

Subject: RE: Acoustic blues show on Facebook Live From: GUEST,MandolinPaul Date: 10 Jun 20 - 09:01 AM You’re right, Hootenanny, that it doesn’t sound much like Muddy's original. The blues (and most music, in my opinion) is about interpretation; I’m not trying to recreate the original. That’s what juke boxes are for. Pretend it’s a song you’ve never heard before, and just listen on its own merits. Would you still argue it doesn’t sound like the blues? If so, then I guess I’ll just agree to disagree with you, because you’re interpreting differently than I am. :) |
Subject: RE: Acoustic blues show on Facebook Live From: GUEST,Wayne Date: 10 Jun 20 - 10:49 AM Well, regardless of whether it's blues or not (gotta say, it sounded like blues to me though), i enjoyed the you tube clip. Sorry to have missed the show. Is it still available to watch? Couldn't find it using the above link. |
Subject: RE: Acoustic blues show on Facebook Live From: GUEST,MandolinPaul Date: 10 Jun 20 - 10:53 AM You haven't missed it yet, Wayne. It happens in about 9 hours (8pm eastern time). Thanks for expressing an interest. I'll post a link for the archived video after the show. |
Subject: RE: Acoustic blues show on Facebook Live From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 10 Jun 20 - 01:14 PM Hi Paul, Like they say "whatever floats your boat". We agree to disagree. Good luck with your live show. |
Subject: RE: Acoustic blues show on Facebook Live From: GUEST,Wayne Date: 11 Jun 20 - 07:13 AM Ha! Lockdown is messing with my brain. Managed to miss it properly. Looking forward to watching the recording though. |
Subject: RE: Acoustic blues show on Facebook Live From: MandolinPaul Date: 11 Jun 20 - 10:26 AM If anyone wants to see the video from my show last night, here's the link. There were five songs on mandolin, four songs on Irish tenor banjo, two songs on five-string banjo. Spoiler: I played some happy(-ish) blues about depressing topics. :) https://www.facebook.com/paulspafford/videos/10158436929878288 |
