Subject: New York TImes: Bob Dole's humor From: keberoxu Date: 05 Dec 21 - 09:20 PM Not to bury Bob Dole, but to consider his sense of humor. Mark Russell stated that Bob Dole was one of the funniest men in D.C., but that Dole's humor was often over other people's heads and they missed the humor in the words. Mother Jones magazine liked to talk of Bob Dole's 'dark side' and when specific, the examples often involved humor. The New York Times saw fit to give it an entire article. Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Dole (1923-2021) From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Dec 21 - 09:33 PM I think we ought to have an obituary thread for Bob Dole. We usually don't allow multiple active threads on any given subject to be open at the same time. I usually didn't agree with Bob Dole's conservative philosophy, but he was a good man, and he wanted the best for the American people. Politics is so different now. I want to go back to the age of Bob Dole, when people could disagree but negotiate. If the Republican Party wants to survive, it must go back to the principles of great Republicans like John McCain and Bob Dole and Everett Dirksen. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Dole (1923-2021) From: Stilly River Sage Date: 05 Dec 21 - 10:15 PM Agreed, Joe. An obit thread for him works for me. The stories we hear about some of the old guard - McCain, Dole, they just don't apply to current GOP folks like McConnell. They were decent human beings under it all. I've heard all day of Dole's "grievous" injuries and being left for dead in WWII, yet he lived to age 98. That is a well-lived life. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Dole (1923-2021) From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Dec 21 - 12:35 AM The news media published tributes to Bob Dole from leaders from both political parties. A certain former President is noticeably missing, and I suppose Jimmy Carter may not be in condition to comment. ABC News and other sources like NBC have tributes from the following: President Joe Biden Former President Barack Obama Former President George W. Bush Former President Bill Clinton Former Vice President Mike Pence Former Vice President Al Gore Sen. Mitt Romney Sen. Bernie Sanders Ambassador to the U.N. Cindy McCain Former Speaker of the House and former Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan Fellow former Kansas Sen. and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Vice President Kamala Harris Senator Mitch McConnell, the Kentucky Republican and minority leader Al Franken, the Democratic former U.S. senator and comedy writer |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Dole (1923-2021) From: EBarnacle Date: 06 Dec 21 - 10:51 PM From what I have read, his only positive action in Washington was his work on the Americans with Disabilities Act. He appears to have been tone deaf to the needs of other disadvantaged groups. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Dole (1923-2021) From: Donuel Date: 07 Dec 21 - 10:47 AM He was more human than Speaker Boener. Dole's speaking voice just didn't sound like it. Boener sounded human when he cried, but he was a screamer & drinker. At the end Dole sadly supported Trump twice. Todays Republicans have a choice between death threats or receiving more money than ever before. The top money donation recipient in Congress right now is Margorie Taylor Greene who is a racist, insurrectionist gun toting big lie supporter and Nazi in her spare time. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Dole (1923-2021) From: keberoxu Date: 11 Dec 21 - 07:53 PM Counter to an earlier post in this thread, on 5 December, the Carter Center's Twitter account showed a post with a statement that begins, "Rosalynn and I are deeply saddened to learn of the death of former Sen. Robert Dole ..." Statement from President Carter about Sen. Bob Dole |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bob Dole (1923-2021) From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Dec 21 - 09:45 PM I was sure Jimmy Carter would say something positive about Bob Dole. Thank you, keberoxu. -Joe- |
