I just got an e-mail from Stefan. He is definitely alive and well and on vacation in France. See his e-mail below:

Glad to hear it!

BTW, I've got a Sobell dulcimer - lovely little instrument made in 1972 (according to the label).

As Dave Swarbrick famously said when a report of his demise featured in the press
"It wouldn't be the first time that I'd died in Coventry!!"

Bernard, tell me about your Sobell dulcimer. I've met people who have them - certainly a collector's item.

I remember Stefan Sobell from years ago when he was playing with Jon Rennard around the Leeds area. I'm so glad to hear he's alive and well. I've visited his website a few times; its well worth a visit.

Cindy, the Sobell dulcimer I have has five strings, and the 'bass' strings are an octave apart. The melody strings are a unison pair, with the 'middle' string on its own. If you follow what I mean!

I'll email you later with some pictures - might even include some of the dulcimer!

I didn't buy it new, an old friend of mine was selling it, mainly because it has some damage near the head which is difficult to repair. Despite that it plays perfectly, though.
