Democracy is alive and well in Iraq. Sadaam Hussein has been confirmed as president for another seven years with 100% of the vote.

When I heard there were going to be elections there, I thought it would be a great opportunity for Dubya to send Katherine Harris to Iraq.Even if Saddam got 100% of the popular vote,they would find a way for Bush to get his person elected President of Iraq.

Even if that person was never on the ballot.

But Dubya would rather bomb than use the methods he is so good at.

Still, is this a good enough reason to go attacking the country? We've lived with that kind of democracy for ages - in Eastern Europe during the Cold War, in South and Central America, in Africa, in Asia, in Europe, I'm sure ... and I seem to remember something about the last presidential elections in a small country called the United States! Mind you, I'm not defending Saddam's regime - all I'm trying to say is how these things are looked at and used is not so much a matter of principle for our governments, rather of political expediency!

The only principle involved is winning and then cashing in, but don't expect your leaders to tell you that. They, like Saddam, want your votes, your hearts, and your minds, and they will not secure them through being open and honest about what they are really up to in the world. No sireee.

The news that reached NZ was that the first election registered 96% for the smiling bloke. The 4% were slung into the slammer, which possibly explains why it was 100% 'for' this time.
