The dude at L&M also told the story that during a recent renovation he was using the above case when he had to move the Multi-thousand $$ guitars... he said he'd take the guitar down off the wall, put it in the case, and just HEAVE it across the room... After 5 or 6 tosses, he'd go over, and unpack the guitars and HEAVE the cases back across the room and start all over...

Somehow I had a feeling this would be about the Fort case...

I've had one for a few months and here's what I like and dislike.

Like: cost (mine was $50), balance (hangs about 45 degrees to the floor from the hand and goes through doors better), pretty heat resistant in spite of its colour (how do they do that?), fits several of my axes but especially good fit for the S&P dread I bought it for, weight (what weight?), comfortable handle, nice shoulder straps...

Dislike: damn velcro closures like to flip closed at will, inside accessory compartment could be larger, is not very puncture proof, no stay on lid (folds all the way open), industrial style appearance (a matter of taste)...

The benefits far outweigh the liabilities. It's a good case for little cash.

I wish they made a deluxe version. Ballistic cloth exterior, something soft lining the inside, clasps instead of velcro, exterior pocket...blah, blah, blah...but that would sort of defeat the purpose wouldn't it? A better solution might be a simple case cover with pockets etc, made to fit the Fort.

I don't like the Fort as much as the Gator (a hard foam, zippered case) which I also use and paid about the same for (part of a guitar purchase), but normally the Fort would be cheaper. I bet it is great for shipping guitars from the factory.

If I may ask...

Velcro closures... Ya... I did have that issue a bit when trying the one at the store... Seemed kinda like as soon as I got 3 of them open one would fall shut again...

Inside Compartment... I don't really carry much in there but a capo and a strap...

Not Puncture Proof... so keep away from Pitch-forks? Really, what's the need for puncture resistance?

Lid Stay? Would be REALLY easy to add though no? I mean a spot of fabric and a couple gobs of hot glue is exactly how it's done on the standard hard shell cases...

industrial style appearance... ya totally a matter of taste...   I wonder how well it'd take stickers or paint?

I'm also curious as to it's "crush" resistance... not the same as impact... any catters with 4-1-1?

It certainly looks like a better case than the thermoplastic pieces of crap that a certain guitar company in Nazareth, PA pretends are quality cases. Still wouldn't trust the airlines with it though. Tossing it down a couple of flights of stairs is one thing. Letting Elmo and Junior who handle baggage for Delta Airlines in Atlanta get hold of it is an entirely different critter.

Re: Puncture resistance...I know, whoda thunk it that a boom stand would fall over near a guitar case. Case was empty, lucky me. There was alot of give/springiness to the case so the stand didn't go clear through, but damn near, and might have hurt the case's occupant had it been home. Duct tape, right? Just how I fix the canoe!

Yup, that's pretty much what I want to do about the lid stay, except that I don't see why that can't be done at the factory, and hot melt might not like the polywolystyreney stuff. Duct tape to the rescue!

All in all though, the thing is better and lighter than most gigbags, and greta (greta?) I mean great for light travel and that long walk across a festival site.

Etc...someone reported on the Acoustic Guitar discussion forum that the velcro closures gradually misalign and the case won't shut tight all the way around after steady use, with some distortion of the edges. This hasn't been my experience yet, but I wonder if the material will warp in time...just FYI...

The Fort case provides excellent padding, but it doesn't have enough stiffness and puncture resistance for airline use. But, a Fort case inside a well-built plywood box with all the vacant areas filled in with styrofoam popcorn or bubblewrap should do the job quite nicely.
