I have a video that has been created in dvd format and I would like to convert into .rm or .avi format

Can anyone here recommend an inexpensive program that can do this - bearing in mind that ease of using such a program is probably the single-most important factor to me.

Windows Movie Maker that comes included with XP will convert your file to .avi format, but you will need to capture it from the DVD first. You'll need capture software.

For capture, I use the app that came with my Roxio Easy Media Creator bundle but if you Google video capture freeware or free software you will find some download to try. They usually capture the DVD video as an .MPG which can then be converted to .AVI easily.

What is the final destination of the converted file, i.e. what did you want to use it for? Maybe AVI isn't the proper format, if you mean it for web use.

Cluin - I have a home made movie that the creator saved onto cd in dvd format.   I would like to put it on Youtube (or similar) - which is why I thought .rm or .avi would be ok for the final format.

Seems they recommend an MPEG4 format for a resolution of 320 x 240 for best results.

ffmpeg

basically you want the vob to avi conversion.
(if you look at the dvd there are files such as ifo (info) and bup (backup) etc you want vob which is the mpeg stream )

ffmpeg (free open source software) it is command line based however

also Ive used Winff which is a frontend for ffmpeg
if you dont want to use the command line.

its free - and worked a hell of a lot better than special software I bought at Bestbuy - which offered all sorts of movie file conversions
and backup ability - and in the end I ended up using ffmpeg.

I've got a similar problem that I've been trying to deal with--converting .asf files into anything that can be burned on to a DVD or VCD--on Mac--

I am using Studio 9 and Premiere 6.5 right now. (the othe PC is rendering as I write). But most of my footage is in DV AVI ot still pictures. They both seem to handle a mixture of formats though neigher will handle MPEG4 - per se.

Wel, I finally did it.

The only way I managed to get a free edit that was the correct way up, unsquashed, the right length and without a watermark plastered over it, was to download a 30 day free trial of the Canopus Procoder Express.
