I sung this song in choir back in 4th grade.
I too have been looking for the music but cannot find it.
I remember the sopranos would sing the "dance dance dance" part really high.

to GUEST,lonely star (plus several others)
the lyrics you have are for the musical piece.

i have been searching for years for the lyrics to the piece i learned in 4th grade choir. and now ive found them. to all of you posting the musical lyrics, that wasnt helpful that was very discouraging. the musical lyrics are very very easy to find. any sheet music site has the musical piece, but not the one i learned. so thanks to GUEST,Here's the words to the variant of The Rythe for posting the lyrics of the version i learned.

and please stop claiming that the version you know is the correct version because there is no correct version.

Far out ... they're using this song as the theme for the 2010 series of Australian Idol. I remember it as a kid ... loved it ... not the Sammy David Jr version though, another version.

I am just learning this fantastic song.. and am honoured to say, I'll be singing it with other members of the just formed Dundee Proms Chorus, for the Dundee Last Night of the Proms 2010! We've just started the rehearsals. At the moment I go blue in the face as its so fast, but I'm just getting the breaths sorted!

I sing soprano, so not all parts will sing it the same...

Verse 1
When I started down the street last Sunday
feelin' mighty low and kind a mean
Suddenly a voice said go forth neighbour
spread the picture on a wider screen
And the voice said neighbour there's a million reasons
why you should be glad in all four seasons
Hit the road neighbour leave your worries and strife
Spread the religion of the rhythm of life

Chorus
For the rhythm of life is a powerful beat
Puts a tingle in your fingers and a tingle in your feet
rhythm on the inside rhythm on the street
and the rhythm of life is a powerful beat
To feel the rhythm of life
                To feel the powerful beat
To feel the tingle in your fingers
To feel the tingle in your feet (2x)

Verse 2
Go and spread the gospel in Milwaukee
Take a walkie talkie to Rocky Ridge
All the way to Canton then to Scranton
even tell it under the Manhattan bridge
Bridge
(Fast 3x)
You will make a new sensation
have a growing congregation
build a glowing operation
here below
Like a pied piper blowing
Lead and keep the music flowing
Keep the rhythm go go going
Go go go

Flip your wings and fly up high
Flip your wings and fly up high
Flip your wings and fly up high,
Fly, fly, fly up high

You can do it if you try
You can do it if you try
You can do it if you try
Try, try, try to fly

Like a bird up in the sky
Like a bird up in the sky
Like a bird up in the sky
Fly, fly, fl-y

Doobi, doobi, doobi, doobi, doobi, doobi, do-bi
Doobi, doobi, doobi, doobi, doobi, doobi, do-bi
Doobi, doobi, doobi, doobi, doobi, doobi, do-bi
Doobi, doobi, doobi, doobi, doobi, doobi, do
(3x)

Chorus 3x
For the rhythm of life is a powerful beat
Puts a tingle in your fingers and a tingle in your feet
rhythm on the inside rhythm in the street
and the rhythm of life is a powerful beat

To feel the rhythm of life
                To feel the powerful beat
To feel the tingle in your fingers
To feel the tingle in your – Life-Life-Life

.. Rhythm- rhythm- rhythm

RHYTHM OF LI--IFE!

Fantastic stuff! This threads been going forever, but here we are, still loving it and singing it!

Interesting. I remember watching Sweet Charity very well, but didn't remember this song at all until this thread began. So, I watched the movie again, and I thought the song just didn't fit the rest of the play, and that it was a totally forgettable song. It's a nice attempt at making fun of shallow spirituality, but nothing really inspiring.

But apparently it strikes a chord with a lot of people, because the thread has lived forever. I wonder if they find it inspiring. Maybe I shouldn't rain on the parade of those who love this song.

I remember doing it in primary school, we were doing the chorus with our year 0 teacher's choir, but i don't know what the verses are. If anyone does know the welsh words please please put them here, thank you :)

We've just been working on The Rhythm of Life - the original cynical version, this is England after all - in a choir I belong to. We sang it in a concert the other day and it went down a bomb. Great fun to sing, with te different parts singing against each other.

One interesting difference and a question arising from it - we had the seventh line as
"Hit the road, Daddy. Leave your trouble and strife" - a phrase that is rhyming slang for "wife". And the version given here has "Hit the road, Daddy. Leave your common-law wife."

So is this a case of an American use of rhyming slang, or a change made here in England?

I don't suppose anyone would happen to know who first adapted Dorothy Fields lyric a la Sweet Charity to the version beloved by choirs?

The choral arrangement (starting "When I started down the street last Sunday") is by Richard Barnes in 1975 and is available from Shawnee Press:
