Are you going to be on radio again? Where else are you regularly performing?

Hello Travelling Singer!

Are you the same one who guested as Travelling Singer from Sussex? If so, welcome to Mudcat! Good to have you aboard.

I regularly visit our local singaround sessions when time allows but I'm not sure about the radio. The Wayland Community Radio has a regular folk programme, and I have appeared on that a couple of times. They have recently gained their full time license from Ofcom, so there will probably be more folk in the future!

Thanks for asking,

Best wishes,

Peter

Hello,

While I was up in the loft this morning I got sidetracked and discovered an old copy of a folk diary from the 1970 somethings called "The Penny Dreadful." I was one of those who was involved in producing it, but I had forgotten I still had a few copies left. What was fascinating was not only the number of clubs there were in SE London in those days, but also the theme of the articles. Is folk music dying? Where have all the audiences gone? I smiled quietly to myself at that point and thought, "Nothing much changes, does it?"

Does anyone else remember "The Penny dreadful?"

Best wishes,

Peter

Yes, I do.

Maybe Folk London has evolved from it as have other mags, e.g. Shire folk , Unicorn.

All the best Pete

remember Bude !/ ?

You ran a good club at the 'Waddon'

Croydon Folk is now the venue

After Orpington on Fridays !!

Oh yes I remember the Penny Dreadful - and I think it was Graham Maisey who did some great cover designs for it???

Wendy, let us know when your bash is. Pig's Ear are venturing to Suffolk during the summer; in the unlikely event that the dates work we'd love to gatecrash. Being as Pig's Ear is all Pete's fault anyway. If Waddon hadn't made Wednesdays Worthwhile, Grant and I wouldn't have met and the Rule Family Folk Band would never have been.

Gawd, Pete, don't you have a lot to answer for???

Oh yes I'm still in the land of the living.   Have a complete set of the Penny Dreadfuls in the attic and they were used by an author called Chris Groom 10-15 years ago as reference for his book "Rock'in around Croydon" which looked at the live music scene in that "noble" town. Will write more later when I'm not busy but it's good to be remembered!

Regards to all who made the Waddon worthwhile

The Pig's Ear Folk Ale is well worth going to, Folkwaller, but a fair distance for you I guess.

Perhaps between us all we can get Pig's Ear 'ere!

We have to be back in Kent for a gig in Sandwich on Sunday 21st, and the Barnaby Rudge at Broadstairs on Monday 22nd, but if there was anything doin' elsewhere on the Thursday 18th or Friday 19th....I will have very sore fingers by the end of it all!! I just listened to Pete's In from the cold CD. It's good stuff, lots of fun, unpretentious, but a quality performance. It's the kind of music that I'd perform if I were English. There's a lightheartedness to Pete's performances that I really enjoy.
Thanks a lot, Pete - I really enjoyed your CD!

-Joe Offer-

Here are the notes from the CD:

This CD is a small snapshot of some of the songs that I enjoy singing. I have also included a couple of monologues. I have remained faithful to the musical influences that shaped my life. First and foremost was Mum, bless her, whose family enjoyed singing. She had uncles who trod the Music Halls and her father played the piano for the silent movies! Dad’s great uncle went over to America to make his fortune and brought back the American songs, an interest that remains alive. Mix that all together with a fine leaven of traditional English music and you have an idea of where I am musically!

    1. The Gentleman Soldier ~ Traditional ~ I have known this song since for ever. It is a good story and a good tune. What more could you want?

    2. The Calico Printer’s Clerk ~ Broadside Ballad ~ Although set in Manchester, there are many other versions. Usually it is the girl who comes of worse in “unhappy in love” songs. I guess the nearest thing today to a Calico Printer’s Clerk would be the chap who takes the money for the guy who prints up the T-shirts!

    3. Dead Dog Scrumpy ~ © Crozier/Sheldon Cinephonic Music Co. Ltd. ~ This song was written by Trevor Crozier. Sadly he was killed in a motorcycle accident. The folk world lost a great talent and I am proud to have called him a friend.

    4. Horniman Rag ~ The Horniman museum is a fascinating museum in South London.

    5. Jim Oglethwaite ~ Monologue ~ My take on an old joke!

    6. The Mitcham Line Shunty ~ I used to commute daily on a two coach train that ran between Wimbledon and West Croydon. Another of my own songs…set to a well known tune!

    7. My Goodness My Guinness ~ unknown ~ This is actually taken from an old advert for Guinness Beer. I found it in a tram car on the Seaton Tramway and set it to music.

    8. Billy Bones ~ Traditional ~ I first heard this on a schools music programme way back when I was 10. I loved it then, and still love it today!

    9. Charlie Motts ~ Music Hall ~ A South London Music Hall song. There are those who say it should be Charlie Mopps, but I’ve always known it as Motts (from Mottingham, don’t ye know!)

    10. The Muffin Man’s Song ~ There are so many fascinating street rhymes in London. The chorus is the old waterman’s fare table to row people across the Thames.

    11. David Lowston ~ Traditional ~ A compelling song from New Zealand.

    12. Bold Captain Webb ~ Music Hall ~ A broadside ballad celebrating a record breaking achievement!

    13. Alfie ~ Monologue ~ A gentle monologue, again from my pen. A familiar story; indeed, only the other day there was a report in the local paper of some-one having a similar misfortune in a church yard!

    14. Sing Song Kitty ~ Traditional ~ This song was a great favourite of Mum’s and she taught it to me.

    15. Lord Franklin ~ Traditional ~ The story of Lord Franklin and his efforts to find the North West Passage are well documented. Another traditional song from the frozen wastes.

    16. Jumbo Stevens ~ When I unearthed this story while researching in the Croydon Local History Library, I knew it just had to be made into a song! The event actually happened! Sometimes fact can be stranger than fiction!

    17. Walking to the Waddon ~ Croydon Folksong Club once met at the Waddon Hotel. Rita and I made up the words to this on a wet walk down to the Waddon Hotel one wet Wednesday. The tune is traditional and is ideal for sloshing down city streets to!

I've just returned to find the lovely post from Joe. Thanks for your thoughts, Joe!

Yes, Travelling Singer, it will be good to meet up again at Pig's Ear. I'm not sure though, do we need non-return inlet valves or exploding biscuit tin ovens to gain entry?

If you notice a few cobwebs when you see me, it's because I've just discovered that I've been archived! Scary!

Peter

Hello TS,

No...it's not uncomfortable...just a bit dusty! ('choo)

Essex Record Office have the privilege of a recording of a gig I did in Chelmsford a wee while ago now. (....and no the recording wasn't on a wax cylinder....)....(the very idea)...(LOL)

It was a good evening as I recall.....interestingly I met up with a member of that audience a few weeks ago. We were already acquaintances but they hadn't made the connection with Chelmsford until I sang a particular song. At the end of the song he said, "I know who you are now!" Wonderful.

Best wishes,

Peter
