From: Rapparee

Just as Giok did, I have changed my Mudcat name so that nobody will have to guess how it's pronounced, assume that I'm associated with rap or hip-hop, etc.

All y'all are welcome.

AND...he changed his name properly, but going to Membership and updating only the information that needed to be changed. Far better and far less confusing than submitting a new membership.
(duplicate memberships are highly discouraged, name changes are fine if done for good reason, but please tell us when you change your name.)

He could not bear the endless stream of remarks I aimed at him about spelling his name "Rapaire" but wanting it to sound like "Rapparee".

Ultimately what did him in was a little ditty I wrote carrying his assertion ad absurdum:

Go out and reparee the car,
The weather is faree and warm,
But take caree not to go far,
Or in some laree come to harm.
But breathe the pleasant summer aree
And shun the barree who sleeps within,
For you've a flaree at pissing off
And causing swaree with clever sins.
Or sit a while in this charee
And do not glaree so and scowl!
Of trials my sharee you have caused
From many affarees dark and foul.
And so repent and in praree
Attempt to purge your many sins
Do not your soul thus imparee
But squaree accounts both out and in.
For though you debonaree are
No billionaree will you be
If you change not your bill of faree
And to disreparee tumble free.

"Bewaree, Oh, Bewaree"
Agnes Saint Claree
Songs from County Claree

How ya gonna keep him
Away from harm,
Runnin' around
And painting the town?
How ya gonna keep him
Down on the farm
That's the mystereeeee!
He's gonna want to hear that jazz-band now!
He'll never want to touch that horse and plow!

Yes it is Jock.
I assumed that Rapaire was a fancy way of spelling repair, and that he was, as in Gilbert & Sullivan, a Wandring minstrel.
Ergo he was 'a thing of rags and patches', and in constant need of Rapaire!

Is Rappy now Bobert?

And if so, who and where is Bobert now?

Jock's prounounced Giok, which I thought was pronounced..duh...giok..

...but giok's now McKenzie anyway.

So...if Giok's Jock, who is now McKenzie, then is Rapairee...jock, or giok, or bobert?

When announcing a change names it might be a good idea to say what the old name was...

What difference does it make how people pronounce a name when we communicate through the "printed" word? How can we tell anyway?

kendall... both spellings indicate an Irish "rebel" who wields a pike or sword.

McGrath sez: What difference does it make how people pronounce a name when we communicate through the "printed" word? How can we tell anyway?

Well, Kevin, even though I've met you in person, I still am not certain how to pronounce your surname. So, every time I see a post from you, I'm profoundly confused.

Come to think of it, maybe profound confusion is just a natural state of life for me.

It helps to know how a name is pronounced when we talk about you. I thought "Rapaire" was "repair" too. You're still gonna be shortened to "Rap".

McGrath, when I heard him on Max's Mudcat radio show way back in the dark ages, was "McGraw".

For years, I thought "epitome" was "eppi tome" -- rymes with "peppapoem", because I only ever heard it in my head when I read it. The first time a thing like that come out of your mouth when you're in a group of folks who know better, you realize that it's good to know pronunciation.

You aren't alone there, Joe. I'm all too accustomed to having shop assistants correct me - "Oh, you mean McGrath - pronouncing it to rhyme with path, or maybe math.

The right way sort of rhymes with hurrah. But I answer to them all anyway. Can't blame people for having problems with a name with six consonants and only one vowel. Klingons and Poles tend to have the same experience...

It's some time since we MacKenzie's gave up trying to get the Sassunachs to pronounce our name correctly. Back in the late 17th century the judge "Bluidie" MacKenzie was always pronounced MacKingie which is a close approximation to the original.

The zed in MacKenzie is actually a yogh. Zed was only found in foreign words such as zeal in the 16th century, and the surname Menzies has the same problem, which is why Charlie's ancestors changed the spelling to Mingus. In later Scots, the spelling was changed to "y" apart from proper names. The Gaelic spelling is MacCoinneach, pronounced (approximately) mac Kunyoch.

I had considered "Jo Offer" or "catspaw48" or "Amuss" but decided not to confuse things any more than they are. "Rapaire" is a fairly obscure Irish Gaelic variant of "Rapparee" -- other names used in the early 18th Century were "Highwayman" or "Tory" (!). It is pronounced "rap-a-ree". I remember back when I first signed on the name "Rapparee" was taken.

As for Shame McBride, I invite him to come visiting. Come heeled, though, 'cause I won't wait. I know about your immovable, rock-like, brain so I'll just gut-shoot ya and leave ya fer the coyotes and cougars. I just don't hanker to his back-shootin', dry-gulchin', cattle poisonin' ways, so I'll jist shoot him outa hand and be done with it. Rewards will be graciously accepted.
