If so I have not seen it
Some people use 'real' names and others post under a designer label
so what I wanted to know was why you choose a particular label
This might dispel some of the mystery though - but I would still like to know if bald Eagle really is bald and which bit of Liz squeaks (or is she just small?). Mainly though what the heck does InOBU mean????
I like to think it means In Outside Broadcast Unit - typing away in the shed in the garden !

Well.....

It's my name. When I first got into the internet and bulletin boards and whatnot, it never occurred to me that you're supposed to use an alias. Then I continued to post with my real name to keep me honest. That way I am not tempted to use an alias to say things I wouldn't stand behind outside of cyber-space.

"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" ... the mudcat forum was the first place of its kind, for me, and I was leery of using my real name, so I used "chinadoll" ... but that didn't feel right. Then I changed it to "humdinger folksinger" (to quote Dylan) ... that was too much of a mouthful and other mudcatters addressed me as "hdfs" ... and there was a question as to whether I was a goil or a boy. Then I decided to used my real name "jenny" ... because I felt comfortable with the people on the mudcat. Then I was stalked by another mudcatter, no longer felt safe, and changed my nickname to "moonchild" ... because I am a child of the moon and thusly, ruled.

I'm no longer afraid to use my real name on the forum and occasionally do, but the name "moonchild" has stuck and become a part of me. Only a very few mudcatters, even those I've met inperson, call me by my real name.

Shanti is a Tibetan word meaning peace. I first ran across it when I was trying to think of a name for a Siamese feline who used to live with me. On one internet list I used my real name, Leslie. Then on another, just recently, I tried to use Shanti, but found I was the 19th of the name in that particular group. I'm not terribly fond of being anything 19, but there you have it. I was glad to be able to use it with the mudcat group, without the numerical designation. Being an avid Celtophile, I sometimes use my current feline roommate's name, with her permission, of course...Grania.

I chose "Soddy" because I decided to pretend to be one of the Big Boys by starting my own record lable and publishing company which I named Old Sod Shanty Music. I use that nicname on several bulletinboards. I named the record lable after a folk song by the same title. So, that's how I did it. As to why, I don't have a ready answer for that. Except that perhaps I didn't use my real name not because I wanted to protect my anonymity, but because there are quite a few people who have the same name I do, complete with the same spelling. I guess I wanted to be different than all those others.

I find it's helpful to use my real name online. It hasn't caused me any problems, but I do use some precautions.

• The only mailing address I give out in public forums is a post office box
• I usually post my e-mail address as a clickable link (or use my Hotmail address)
• I don't give my exact date of birth on Mudcat Resources
• I don't post messages that reveal that I will be away from home for a long period of time
• My home address is not published in the telephone book
• I don't mind people knowing my home phone number, although I don't usually post it in Web messages.
• If you attack or provoke people online, be aware that they may wish to fight back in ways you may not have anticipated. If you're not nice by nature, it might be an idea to be nice online for your own protection.

If you don't use your real name online, you may not need to be quite as cautious, but you should use some prudence about what you reveal about yourself. I think that women need to be a little more cautious then men, but I don't think anybody needs to get too paranoid about Internet privacy. I'd recommend prudence, not paranoia.

Huzzah for the theatre! Me too - hs, college, & community - now do storytelling, which is modified theatre. Pseudolus is great, but my all-time favorite has to be LaMancha.

Used this name for a long time on various mailing lists - pretty easy to figure - them's mah two fave-O-rite kinds o'music! (and 5 thanks to my perennial absent-mindedness - used celticblues & forgot the password (on a different list), so the thing wouldn't let me re-sign-up as the same name because there was already someone by that name (me!) on the list - who sez puters aren't capable of bureaucracy? ;-)

I chose my name because when I joined the Mudcat my favourite teddy was sitting by the computer. He is called Bobby, and (for those of you who are old enough to remember) there was a song called Bobby's Girl, which suddenly, under the influence of a couple of glasses of wine, seemed appropriate. It confused the heck out of Bill/sables when we called at his house though, when he knew I was Bobby's Girl, and assumed that my husband, whose name is John, was Bobby!

I'm never done any physical acting, but I love dramatic readings. I did this with my sister in a Theatre Literature class we were in together. It was loads of fun. She admits my Hamlet was better than Branaugh. Hee hee, I even shocked the other classmates by putting on a perfect British accent for Prospero! But my highest regarded, performace was Gabriel in August Wilson's "Fences." Great play! Oy...back to the music..

That led me to attend the National Hobo Convention at Britt, Iowa in 1996, where I was dubbed a "Knight of the Road" by Luther the Jet, who was then King of the Hobos. Luther asked for my road name. I didn't have one, so I said "Downeast Bob" because my home was in Maine. I figured what was good enough for the hobo community was good enough for the Mudcat community. My real name is Bob Baldwin.

I started off at Little Neophyte, because that is what I was at the time. I had no clue about folk music and I had just taken up playing the banjo.
Then I changed my name to Banjo Bonnie as I became more confident with my music.
Then I changed my name back to Little Neophyte because I felt I was way over my head music wise and felt like I wanted to crawl back into my crib.
Then I changed my name back to Banjo Bonnie when I had built up some confidence and didn't feel so little anymore.
Now I would like to change my name back to Little Neophyte because it suites me more, but I figure whoever is managing the resource page will kill me and I will confuse people so much they will be mad at me.
So I figure I should just accept my moniker but really folks I am Little Neophyte at heart.

Mrrzy IS my own name, at least it's the nickname I've had since I was a baby. Anyone I write notes to learns it right quick since I sign notes Mrr. Not a lot of people know this but I am a card carrying member of EQUITY the British actors union. I used to do a bit of extra work for television companies but I wasn't quick enough to get to the front of the line when dinner was called and it seemed to be the ambition of every extra to beat the proper actors and crew to the food and then eat as though you'd never eaten for a week. I will never understand why, but I was always cast either as a convict in chains in a medieval prison or a Tramp or wineo I remember turning up once to play the part of a tramp and the wardrobe mistress, the cheeky bugger, said the clothes that I was wearing would be perfect for the part. these were the clothes that I usually wore every day.
