Subject: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 01 Aug 00 - 12:42 PM this has probably been explained earlier If so I have not seen it Some people use 'real' names and others post under a designer label so what I wanted to know was why you choose a particular label This might dispel some of the mystery though - but I would still like to know if bald Eagle really is bald and which bit of Liz squeaks (or is she just small?). Mainly though what the heck does InOBU mean???? I like to think it means In Outside Broadcast Unit - typing away in the shed in the garden ! Roger |
Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: Sean Belt Date: 01 Aug 00 - 12:55 PM Well..... It's my name. When I first got into the internet and bulletin boards and whatnot, it never occurred to me that you're supposed to use an alias. Then I continued to post with my real name to keep me honest. That way I am not tempted to use an alias to say things I wouldn't stand behind outside of cyber-space. - Sean |

Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: bbelle Date: 01 Aug 00 - 01:18 PM "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" ... the mudcat forum was the first place of its kind, for me, and I was leery of using my real name, so I used "chinadoll" ... but that didn't feel right. Then I changed it to "humdinger folksinger" (to quote Dylan) ... that was too much of a mouthful and other mudcatters addressed me as "hdfs" ... and there was a question as to whether I was a goil or a boy. Then I decided to used my real name "jenny" ... because I felt comfortable with the people on the mudcat. Then I was stalked by another mudcatter, no longer felt safe, and changed my nickname to "moonchild" ... because I am a child of the moon and thusly, ruled. I'm no longer afraid to use my real name on the forum and occasionally do, but the name "moonchild" has stuck and become a part of me. Only a very few mudcatters, even those I've met inperson, call me by my real name. moonchild/jenny |

Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: Shanti Date: 01 Aug 00 - 01:33 PM Shanti is a Tibetan word meaning peace. I first ran across it when I was trying to think of a name for a Siamese feline who used to live with me. On one internet list I used my real name, Leslie. Then on another, just recently, I tried to use Shanti, but found I was the 19th of the name in that particular group. I'm not terribly fond of being anything 19, but there you have it. I was glad to be able to use it with the mudcat group, without the numerical designation. Being an avid Celtophile, I sometimes use my current feline roommate's name, with her permission, of course...Grania. |

Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: Jim Krause Date: 01 Aug 00 - 02:12 PM I chose "Soddy" because I decided to pretend to be one of the Big Boys by starting my own record lable and publishing company which I named Old Sod Shanty Music. I use that nicname on several bulletinboards. I named the record lable after a folk song by the same title. So, that's how I did it. As to why, I don't have a ready answer for that. Except that perhaps I didn't use my real name not because I wanted to protect my anonymity, but because there are quite a few people who have the same name I do, complete with the same spelling. I guess I wanted to be different than all those others. |
Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: Gervase Date: 01 Aug 00 - 02:16 PM Yup, Roger, you've sussed it; Liz DOES squeak! We've tried WD40, extra virgin olive oil, bat dripping and Castrol, but you can't get rid of the squeak... |
Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: Irish sergeant Date: 01 Aug 00 - 02:43 PM I picked mine because I am a Civil War reenactor and I portray an Irishman who has been in the army since the Mexican War. My CW rank is that of first Sgt. so it was sort of a no-brainer. One questio; How many extra virgins does it take to make extra virgin olive oil? Kindest reguards, Neil |

Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: Sean Belt Date: 01 Aug 00 - 02:55 PM Psuedolus, Good to see another actor on the forum. I also spend a lot of time acting. Depended on it for a (meager) living for a few years. Any other theatrical types 'round here? Maybe we should start a new thread to acknowledge the actor/musicians amongst us! - Sean |
Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: Shanti Date: 01 Aug 00 - 02:57 PM And you're either a virgin or you're not...can't be EXTRA virgin, unless you're a saint. And if you're going to use extra virgins, wouldn't that be excessive viginity in your olive oil? |
Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: bbelle Date: 01 Aug 00 - 03:02 PM Sean ... a good idea ... go for it! I am an actor, too. (I consider the word "actor" to be all encompassing.) It would be interesting to see how many of us enjoy this form of expression. moonchild |

Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: Gervase Date: 01 Aug 00 - 03:12 PM But hang on (adopts serious, poncey mode), Doesn't acting encompass any sort of performance - be it playing, singing or dancing - in that by doing so you are stepping out of yourself and shrugging off your everyday self? Thus isn't every one of us here an actor ('even if the acting is confined to posting things you wouldn't otherwise say under pseudonyms,' he said, darkly). |

Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: celticblues5 Date: 01 Aug 00 - 03:15 PM Huzzah for the theatre! Me too - hs, college, & community - now do storytelling, which is modified theatre. Pseudolus is great, but my all-time favorite has to be LaMancha. Used this name for a long time on various mailing lists - pretty easy to figure - them's mah two fave-O-rite kinds o'music! (and 5 thanks to my perennial absent-mindedness - used celticblues & forgot the password (on a different list), so the thing wouldn't let me re-sign-up as the same name because there was already someone by that name (me!) on the list - who sez puters aren't capable of bureaucracy? ;-) |

Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: Sean Belt Date: 01 Aug 00 - 04:02 PM Oh, GUEST:Ed, must you bring your personal issues with another poster into every venue? It really is tiresome and childish. Please do take the time to get over yourself. And I seriously doubt that it'll get anyone to think well of you over how we all think of Moonchild. She seems pleasant and mostly well mannered. You on the other hand seem to strive for neither. It's also strange that you cop Ed Wood's name for your post. It shows an awful disrespect for a man who's given so many of us a lot of (albeit unintended) laughter. There are many directors much worse that poor old Ed. At least he had a passion for what he did and a charming ineptness showed through in almost all of it. The same could probably not be said for your snide and unimaginative little posts. There. I've said my piece and resolve henceforth to ignore the resultant self-important snit-fit from certain individuals that I see looming on the horizon. Now, then how did you choose your nickname? - Sean |

Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: bobby's girl Date: 01 Aug 00 - 04:17 PM I chose my name because when I joined the Mudcat my favourite teddy was sitting by the computer. He is called Bobby, and (for those of you who are old enough to remember) there was a song called Bobby's Girl, which suddenly, under the influence of a couple of glasses of wine, seemed appropriate. It confused the heck out of Bill/sables when we called at his house though, when he knew I was Bobby's Girl, and assumed that my husband, whose name is John, was Bobby! |
Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: Pseudolus Date: 01 Aug 00 - 04:19 PM Whoa, fellow thespians!! Who'da thunk it?!? Actually I agree with the post that said we are all actors in a way. I've sung songs just to sing them and then I've sung them "in character" and it's amazing the different reaction!! Anyway, theatre has influenced my musical side in a BIG way. choice of songs, style of delivery, and (so that I don't creep any furthur away from the topic....sorry) my name!!!!! Frank |
Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: bbelle Date: 01 Aug 00 - 04:25 PM To quote ... "every world's a stage ..." I remember "Bobby's Girl." It was a great teen song. moonchild |

Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: Mbo Date: 01 Aug 00 - 04:34 PM I'm never done any physical acting, but I love dramatic readings. I did this with my sister in a Theatre Literature class we were in together. It was loads of fun. She admits my Hamlet was better than Branaugh. Hee hee, I even shocked the other classmates by putting on a perfect British accent for Prospero! But my highest regarded, performace was Gabriel in August Wilson's "Fences." Great play! Oy...back to the music.. |
Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: Downeast Bob Date: 01 Aug 00 - 04:43 PM I sometimes go out and hop freight trains. That led me to attend the National Hobo Convention at Britt, Iowa in 1996, where I was dubbed a "Knight of the Road" by Luther the Jet, who was then King of the Hobos. Luther asked for my road name. I didn't have one, so I said "Downeast Bob" because my home was in Maine. I figured what was good enough for the hobo community was good enough for the Mudcat community. My real name is Bob Baldwin. |
Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: Nynia Date: 01 Aug 00 - 04:49 PM Nynia, also known as St. Ninian, a native of SW Scotland who studdied in Rome and brought Christianity to my homeland many moons before Columba. I'm not big into religion I just like the name, it was there when I was looking for a monica. Like Shanti I didn't fancy being no 19+ of anything. Anyway it's fun when people hear me and discover that Nynia is really a guys name. :-) |
Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: Little Neophyte Date: 01 Aug 00 - 04:54 PM I started off at Little Neophyte, because that is what I was at the time. I had no clue about folk music and I had just taken up playing the banjo. Then I changed my name to Banjo Bonnie as I became more confident with my music. Then I changed my name back to Little Neophyte because I felt I was way over my head music wise and felt like I wanted to crawl back into my crib. Then I changed my name back to Banjo Bonnie when I had built up some confidence and didn't feel so little anymore. Now I would like to change my name back to Little Neophyte because it suites me more, but I figure whoever is managing the resource page will kill me and I will confuse people so much they will be mad at me. So I figure I should just accept my moniker but really folks I am Little Neophyte at heart. Bonnie |

Subject: RE: how did you choose your mudcat name? From: bill\sables Date: 01 Aug 00 - 07:09 PM Not a lot of people know this but I am a card carrying member of EQUITY the British actors union. I used to do a bit of extra work for television companies but I wasn't quick enough to get to the front of the line when dinner was called and it seemed to be the ambition of every extra to beat the proper actors and crew to the food and then eat as though you'd never eaten for a week. I will never understand why, but I was always cast either as a convict in chains in a medieval prison or a Tramp or wineo I remember turning up once to play the part of a tramp and the wardrobe mistress, the cheeky bugger, said the clothes that I was wearing would be perfect for the part. these were the clothes that I usually wore every day.
