Subject: RE: BS: on the naming of Snowploughs From: Tattie Bogle Date: 01 Jan 23 - 07:25 PM Rumour has it that there’s one on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides called “Wee Freeze”! Do I need to spoil the joke by explaining it? |
Subject: RE: BS: on the naming of Snowploughs From: keberoxu Date: 02 Jan 23 - 10:25 AM It's okay, Tattie Bogle, we know about the Wee Frees versus the Frees. |
Subject: RE: BS: on the naming of Snowploughs From: Charmion Date: 03 Jan 23 - 02:01 PM The southwestern Ontario regional municipality of Chatham-Kent recently held two competitions to name its highway plows. The first batch of winning entries includes: Betty Whiteout, Ctrl Salt Delete, Flurrie Jenkins (a riff on Ferguson Jenkins), Harry Plowter, Edward Blizzardhands, and Scoop Dogg. The second round of voting produced: Anita Shovel, Gordie Plow, the Blizzard of Oz, Darth Blader, the Pillsbury Plowboy, Sled Zeppelin, Buzz Ice-Clear, Qunuk (Inuktituut for "snowflake"), Flurrious George, School's Not Cancelled, Snobi One Kenobi, and Sleetwood Mac. The art of the pun is alive and well, and living in Chatham. |

Subject: RE: BS: on the naming of Snowploughs From: keberoxu Date: 09 Nov 23 - 02:13 PM I went to look at the Transport Scotland interactive snowplough map, using the links in this thread. A sign-in page popped up. Seems you can't look at that map without an account. |

Subject: RE: BS: on the naming of Snowploughs From: Tattie Bogle Date: 24 Feb 24 - 05:07 AM I should think most of them are hibernating, apart from a few in the Highlands and NorthEast, as it has been almost a “no snow” winter so far for us. One morning when about an inch of the white stuff fell, but was gone by lunchtime. But every week since November there have been headlines such as “600 mile snowbomb to hit UK” or “Forecasters predict exact date snow will arrive in Edinburgh”………but nothing! The lack of snow has meant that they have been able to complete a proper resurface of a half mile section of main road near us, after its potholes shredded hundreds of tyres: took 4 weeks, working through the nights too, so here’s some names for resurfacing machinery. Subject: RE: BS: on the naming of Snowploughs From: keberoxu Date: 24 Feb 24 - 10:33 AM How right you are about the potholes. The nearest large city to where I am staying, is infamous for two things: the lack of salt to melt the ice on the roads in winter, and the potholes that form when the temperatures get warmer. Love the pothole-relevant names as well. |
