Subject: BS: What's the recent movie about the Stasi?
From: PoppaGator

I remember a lot of media buzz several months ago about a film set in East Germany, concerning a secret-police agent spying on a couple in their apartment. One or both of the couple were, I believe, performing artists of some kind, and there's some kind of ironic plot twist as the spy gets increasingly involved in his subjects' lives.

Like most independent and/or foreign "art films," this movie never had a theatrical showing in my area. I believe it's available on DVD now, and I'd like to rent it and see it, but I can't remember the title and I've been unable to search it out on the internet by such "keyowrds" as East Germeny, secret police, Stasi, etc. I don't remember any names of actors or the director, either, which would certrainly make a search much easier...

It may have been a 2006 release (in the States, at least), or perhaps early 2007.

Can anyone help?

Close, Dave's Wife, but no cigar - it's called The Lives of Others.
Thanks for the tip - this is one I have to buy.

Thanks! That was characteristically Mudcat-quick!!!

(I think the English-language title will work best on Netflix, but thanks anyway, Alan!)

Anybody know if there is a German track on the U.S. version of the DVD? I suppose the German will be too complicated for my stepson/student, but I'll enjoy it.
Any suggestions for German-language movies available in the US that would not be too difficult for a student in his second year of high school German?

I rented the film from Blockbuster--it's in German with subtitles, thank god. I hate dubbed films. It deservedly won the Oscar for best foreign language film of 2006--it's a terrific story.

I was close! Next time I'll actually ook it up before just blurting out my idea of what the name is! ;-)

My Netflix Queue is quite different from my husband's. The next movie on my list is the Disney version of Greyfriar's Bobby! I have about 100 movies on my list and a good 3rd of them are dog movies - can you tell how much I miss my Puppers?

When I saw the film something happened that is very unusual for a German film audience: well deserved applause and cheers at the end

Wikipedia article about Ulrich Mühe the late actor of the Stasi captain.

Mühe's response when asked how he prepared for his role in Das Leben der Anderen was, "I remembered."

After a lot of searching I was able to find the movie in Anchorage in a reconstituted old fashioned movie house where they 'updated' it by taking out every other row of seats and put in little tables so one can watch the movie while eating pretty good fresh pizza and drinking pretty good beer, including microbrew.

Really liked the movie, which was shown in original language with subtitles.

"Das Leben der Anderen" is a real good movie, without any doubt.
But please would you like to tell me why some british and US-people are so interested in/ fascinated by movies like this one?

Manfred
