Subject: A snatch of song... makes me crazy!
From: rcleland@isothermal.cc.nc.us
Date: 29 Jul 99 - 02:36 PM

There was a commercial some time ago (advertising what, I cannot recall) which used the first (?) line of some song which I have been singing all day, and which is making me nuts to discover what it is. The words of this line are:

"I don't want to set the world on fire..."

WHAT IS IT?? Any of you sharp people know?

It's a pop song from the '40s or '50s:

I don't want to set the world on fire,
I just want to start a flame in your heart.
In my heart there is but one desire,
And that one is you, no other will do.
I've lost all ambition for worldly acclaim,
I only want to be the one you love,
(two more lines of the bridge that I can't remember)
I don't want to set the world on fire,
I just want to start a flame in your heart.

Another of the old coots here can probably supply the missing two lines.

Old coot, checking in!. Your missing lines are:

And with your admission that you feel the same
I'll have reached the goal I'm dreaming of, believe me.

I don't know that one, but, since we're on the topic, WHO wrote/performed:

"Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain..."

It came up in a song circle this week, we all knew most of the words and the melody, but everyone drew a blank when we tried to identify who wrote/performed it...

TIA!!!

Here are all of the words:

Rhythm Of The Rain The Cascades

Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain,
Telling me just what a fool I've been.
I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain,
And let me be alone again.

Now the only girl I've ever loved has gone away.
Looking for a brand new start!
But little does she know that when she left that day.
Along with her she took my heart.

Rain, please tell me, now does that seem fair
For her to steal my heart away when she don't care
I can't love another, when my heart's somewhere far away.

Rain, won't you tell her that I love her so
Please ask the sun to set her heart aglow
Rain in her heart and let the love we know start to grow.

Dan Fogleberg also performed it on The Wild Places, 1990.

We had a huge thread on the Cascades a year or so ago (back in coots time). I have no idea what it was originally under (thread creep is not new). I certainly provoked it. Doesn't seem to come up in my search engine (maybe one of those days).
yours, Peter T.

Everyone already seems to have all the answers supplied while I was meeting Cara...But let me ask you this......

I know I am the most depraved, irreverent, sick, and over-the-top, yahoo around here, but am I the only one who finds "A Snatch of Song" as a strong mental image. Seeing such would indeed make a lot of people crazy. Not me, as I once saw a porn movie where the female lead smoked a cigarette that way so I suppose singing isn't out of the question.

Sorry, 'Spaw, but at least one of the "ladies" around here can picture it, too. Saw the same porno flick, I think (or else it's a popular theme...) And my (former) voice teacher once told me to sing from "down there" (HONEST!!), so maybe he's seem it, too!

I thought about that meaning, too, and was about to post on it when I realized that I knew the song--I guess I'm almost as depraved as you. --seed
