Subject: RE: Obit: 'Country Joe' McDonald 1942-2026 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 08 Mar 26 - 10:48 PM From the New York Times obit: Country Joe McDonald, Whose Antiwar Song Became an Anthem, Dies at 84 One of the starring acts at Woodstock, he and his band, the Fish, came out of the Bay Area’s psychedelic rock scene. He went on to a long career as a solo artist. Country Joe McDonald, whose performance at Woodstock — in which he led a crowd of 400,000 through a subversive cheer before starting his satirical antiwar song “I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-to-Die Rag” — struck a chord so deep, it often obscured the variety and scope of his career, died on Saturday at his home in Berkeley, Calif. He was 84. |

Subject: RE: Obit: 'Country Joe' McDonald 1942-2026 From: Rapparee Date: 09 Mar 26 - 11:45 AM I believe he served in the Navy in Vietnam area. If so, the Parkinsons might have been Agent Orange related. |

Subject: RE: Obit: 'Country Joe' McDonald 1942-2026 From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 09 Mar 26 - 12:12 PM I didn't know much of CJ and The Fish beyond Fixin' to Die Rag/Fish Cheer but judging by the live stuff I've heard thought he was great solo performer who never got his due in that regard. |

Subject: RE: Obit: 'Country Joe' McDonald 1942-2026 From: Folkimages Date: 09 Mar 26 - 06:06 PM I first saw "Country Joe" McDonald in the film of the Woodstock Festival at our local cinema and then was lucky enough to have seen him playing solo at the Bickershaw festival, near Wigan, in 1972 and again at Leeds Festival in 1983 with a backing band. I remember enjoying his 'War War War' and 'Incredible Live Country Joe' albums which I bought after the Bickershaw show. Happy days! |

Subject: RE: Obit: 'Country Joe' McDonald 1942-2026 From: Charley Noble Date: 09 Mar 26 - 08:18 PM I remember taping the "Fish Cheer" song in-between my first and second tour in the Peace Corps before I returned to teaching in Ethiopia. My draft board attempted to draft me while I was in the States but a kindly induction doctor was dissuaded from approving me as "fit to serve" by my chronic amoebic dysentery. My Peace Corps friends really enjoyed hearing the song as we celebrated my return to Addis Ababa. Charlie Ipcar |

Subject: RE: Obit: 'Country Joe' McDonald 1942-2026 From: Mark Ross Date: 10 Mar 26 - 04:17 PM I was married (once). The wedding was at the Justice of the peace's house (he had to turn off the ballgame). Wedding reception was at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Officers Club (Dad was retired military and got a discount), and when we returned to my parents' house my brother greeted us with The Fish Cheer from Woodstock. Which goes to show how prescient he was. The marriage didn't last more than 2 years. |

There are three hundred thousand of you fuckers out there and I want you to start singing!" Brilliant. Bloody brilliant. Where are his likes today! "Can't be singing louder than the guns while I'm gone So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here" (the wonderful Phil Ochs) |
