It was the gold coin, bent by a bullet at Shilo that the captain carried as a good like charm... wow... Larry |

Subject: RE: Remarkable find on CSS Hunnely From: Banjer Date: 03 Jul 01 - 06:20 PM I have been following and supporting the Hunley project for some time now. Wife and I are members of Friends of the Hunley. There were many exciting finds in the sub. Did you know that besides Lt Dixon's coin, the lantern which was used to signal the successful completion of the mission to those on shore was also found? Several pipes and bottles, uniform parts, (fabric and buttons), and most important ALL of the crews remains have been recovered. I am already planning my next years vacation to coincide with the interment of the crew at Magnolia Cemetery along side the other two crews lost in the Hunley. A very interesting piece of history has finally arrived home!! Incidentaly the back of the twenty dollar gold piece which was given Lt Dixon by his sweetheart was inscribed 'SHILOH, April 6, 1862, My life preserver, G.E.D.' (Lt Dixon's initials). Just imagine a TWENTY dollar gold piece being carried (as a good luck charm) by a soldier in a period when the average soldiers MONTHLY pay was just $13.00!! |

Subject: RE: Remarkable find on CSS Hunnely From: Matt_R Date: 03 Jul 01 - 06:40 PM Awesome! I also heard that they had found his ornately-carved ivory lighter, inside of which, still preserved, was a folded piece of paper that read: "Come see Sorcha Dorcha, hardest-working band in New York City! Don't let enemy lines and Yankee forces get in your way! See them today!" |

Subject: RE: Remarkable find on CSS Hunnely From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 04 Jul 01 - 07:49 AM The tale about the Captain's life being saved by a gold coin at Shiloh has been known for some time. Now we know it was not just a tale, it was a true story. Roger in Baltimore |

Subject: RE: Remarkable find on CSS Hunnely From: GUEST,Lanfranc at the orifice Date: 04 Jul 01 - 12:24 PM Try Here - http://www.diveweb.com/commdive/features/novdec2000.01.htm or Google for "CSS Hunley" as I did! Fascinating! |
Subject: RE: Remarkable find on CSS Hunnely From: Banjer Date: 04 Jul 01 - 12:43 PM You will find the official site of the Friends of the Hunley here. They are currently not doing any excavating. About 90% is done and they are now working to preserve and catalog all they have found so far. They intend to start work again in the fall. GO to the site and it will answer all questions you may have. |
