Am I crazy, or do I remember a TV commercial from back in the 50s featuring "that little old wine MAKER, me"?

I think I remember the commercial but not the Dean Martin song. Considering the era, the only thing that makes sense is that that the song would have come first, and then the commercial was produced as a reference to it.

Nowadays, it's entirely conceivable that a commercial could come first, worm its way into the collective mass mind, and then be referred to by something "real" like a song -- or a political slogan; remember "Where's the Beef?"

PoppaGator, your second assumption is correct: The "little old winemaker" commercial came first. That's what made the song title funny. I think the commercial was for Gallo wines.

Ok, I'm *not* crazy! And now that you mention it, I think I remember tht Gallo was indeed the sponsoring winery.

I guess the undue influence of TV goes back further than I suspected. And yes, the song would have been funny mostly (if not entirely) because of the reference to the commercial.

Sorry Guys - The little old wine has fuddled the cells a little:-)

Little Old Wine Drinker Me was part of the score for the 1958 moonshine running classic 'Thunder Road'. The song was sung by the films leading man, Robert Mitchum, before it was made famous by Dean Martin 9 years later in 1967.

I found the following on "Little old wineMAKER me" - In the 1960s, Italian Swiss Colony wine producers chose a sweet little old man (Ludwig Stossel) dressed in an Alpine hat and lederhosen to be their TV spokesperson for their fine line of quality wines. His favorite closing phrase was "That little old winemaker...Me!" His voice was performed by Jim Backus.

In addition I found the following - The name Ludwig Stössel is no longer a concept for most people in Germany, but in the USA he is still well-known. Beside his role in "Casablanca" he also became famous with a serial of promotional films for the winegrowing estaten Gallo for which he impersonated the figure "Little Old Winemaker" for one decade. Confirming that the Gallo ads were in the 60s, after the Italian/Swiss ones.

But, I am never one to let the facts spoil a good story - Just once a gnerd, always a gnerd;-)

Cheers

Dave the Gnome

Robert Mitchum made this a popular tune on country radio. Had to be somewhere in the late 60's or early 70's. There has to be a recording of his version somewhere on the web.

'I match the man behind the bar for the jukebox'

What does 'match' mean in this context?
