When life starts getting me down, I don't go up on the roof, as the Drifters suggested. I put on a Mystery Science Theater 2000 DVD and laugh my head off.

Any people out there fans of the series? Any particular movies I should check out? I'll give some of my favorites after I see if anyone else is interested...

Classic lines would be great, too..

Jerry

Jerry, I used to watch it a few years ago, then I moved, it moved (I think) and I never know when it's on. I also have a hard time sitting through the crappy movies in order to hear the funny lines.

I used to love it because I like to think I'm pretty quick, but there were lines I'd get a couple of minutes after someone said them, and some I never got. It seemed like, as the series got more popular, the humor got a bit more 'pop', but I'm not sure that's true. It was still funny the last time I saw it, just not as funny. I suppose people have to run out of sarcastic sci-fi movie lines sometime, but it's more likely the novelty just wore off for me.

Joel is now on DVD? Years ago, when I lived in the Twin Cities Joel & his whacky kitchen appliances soared through space on a non-network TV station. I liked what Joel did on his show, cause I used to do sit up late at night with my younger brother, watch a ridiculous "horror" flick & make fun of it. Despite the fact that there were those few of us then who watched & wrote in asking them to keep Joel on the air, he was dumped. Then I heard he was on cable!

The Day the Earth Froze
The Golden Voyage of Sindbad
Girls Town
Manos, Hands of Fate
Santa Claus

I could go on.... The MST3K movie (based on "This Island Earth") was good too.

The show "got old" when the supply of interestingly bad films dried up, leaving only the bottom of the barrel ("The Wild Wild World of Bat Woman," "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank," etc.) These were *so* goldurn bad not even the planet's Best Brains could make them funnty.

Once MST3K became a cult hit, owners of "good" bad movies decided to boost the price of rights through the roof, foolishly assuming that if MST3K wouldn't pay to exhibit these stinkers, somebody else would.

And the party was over.

Yeah... I'd vote for Manos, Hands Of Fate and The Amazing Collosal Man as my two favorites. I don't believe that there's any shortage of lousy movies, though. A couple of nights ago, I was flipping around the channels and came across something with a title like Humanoids From the Ocean Deep. It was like an R rated Creture From The Black Lagoon. These monsters walked up onto the beach to catch teenagers who were having sex, and grabbed the girls and raped them.
I watched about two minutes of it, and wondered where the heads silhouetted against the movie screen were. I guess they wouldn't touch an R-rated movie. The movie was "starring" Dough McClure (veteran of a thousand clinkers) and Vic Morrow. Don't stay up for it.

I still like to throw one in the DVD player every once in awhile.. it reminds me of when I was raising my teenage sons and we'd all sit around and watch the movies together, adding our own sarcastic one-liners. The movies definitely benefit from watching them with other people..

My favorite is the one about the geekie guy whose parents drink too much, don't celebrate his birthday and send him in search of new "friends" to whom he confesses plaintively "Today is my birthday." Hilarious.

You know when I really miss the little silhouettes?

When I'm watching the news.

We used to do our own version on movie nights where we'd each pick a clunker to laugh over. I always picked "The Legend of Boggy Creek"... a classic.

Ahhhh, MST3K...that's just good television. *grin*

Although I usually prefer the Joel shows, I grudgingly came to accept and then enjoy Mike (especially after I realized he'd been one of the writers all along, which boosted his credibility enormously). But he's not as geeky-cute as Joel ;)

But that's OK...my heart will always belong to Tom Servo. (Or Croooooooooooooooow!)

Molly

(wishing for an MST3K DVD box set so I could spend too much money on it ;))

Smokey and the Fouke Monster

A quote from the page:

n "The Man behind The Legend", Smokey Crabtree regales us once again with stories from the Sulphur River Bottoms. He weaves down-home wisdom throughout stories of fishing, hunting, welding, and growing up in the backwoods of Arkansas. Learn how his father, the man behind Smokey Crabtree, was forced into going against his better judgment just to provide for his family. Imagine the adventures Smokey had with a monkey and a determined beaver.
Go - if you dare - into the Sulphur River bottoms to experience unexplained phenomena still baffling even Smokey today. Enter the world of Smokey Crabtree - a tough, no-holds-barred welder with deep roots in his community and an undying sense of family - in "The Man behind the Legend."

This stuff just kills me. I've got to rent that movie again!

Harpmolly:

Ah. but there are several boxed sets of MST3000 available. Like Saturday Night Live, there are hilarious programs and ones that don't quite work (at least for me.) I have five of the movies on DVD, but my favorit is still The Incredible Collosal Man (or whatever the exact title is) which I have on Video, but last time I checked, it wasn't out on DVD.

I went back and watched part of Manos: Hands Of Fate last night and while it gets off to an incredibly slow start (the first 20 minutes looks like a 1950's chevrolet commercial, driving through farm land) it really gets into gear when they arrive at the mystery hotel... which seems to only have a single room...
