Those of you who play host to the traveling pair, please think about sending a photo or two to be posted here at Mudcat. (And it would be nice if there were just one place where they were all posted--easier for Joybell to track down later, and easier for those following the trip to find).

I miss you with all my heart particularly Hildebrand with whom I like to snuggle. I like Joy too as she pays for my affection with food.Greg says his life is diminished by your absence but a chocolate bar helped fix that. Holly has been in your bedroom sniffing your pillows and making little howling noises. Helen's up to apple 386.

OH!! WOW!! Couldn't get my hands on a computer until now. Where to start? Where? 17 hours in the Sliver Bird. Waved to you, Sandra from the holding pen at Sydney.
Set off down the freeway South from LA. at 2.00 in the morning so as to avoid rush hour. Hildebrand driving. Me repeating, "stay on the right!" Sign said "Highway closed at Jeffrey". Who's Jeffrey? Where's Jeffrey? Few miles later we were lost in an industrial estate. Blundered back onto the Interstate after an hour or so. Passed you at dawn, Amos. Waved and called "See you later, Amos!"
Turned East along the border. 10 years ago while waiting in a bus queue at Phoenix, a travelling salesman told me one of the most beautiful places on earth was the road we now took.
The sun got steadily higher and hotter. We passed through the most amazing canyons of tumbles of pink and grey rocks. The valleys filled with cactus gardens of Ocotillo and later Saguaros. I so love this wild country.
Must go for the moment. We're on a high desert in New Mexico. Wildflowers everywhere. Hildebrand's keen to go to Silver City. We'll call Stilly River Sage tonight. Hildebrand will. I'm afeared of the phone system. Be back soon. Love to all of you. Joy

Joybell, good to see you're on the road. It was a close one as far as your proposed call. My phone has been out of order since Saturday morning. I just called myself from work and the answering machine picked up (it's the lunch hour on Monday), so I hope it stays working. I'll PM my cel phone number--only use it if the other one doesn't pick up, because I don't use it much.

Suguros? You are coming across on the southern route, then. No saguros higher than 3000 feet. We are off to North Carolina on Thursday, and back on the 17th...call us if plans change. Beautiful weather planned...just for you.

They called this evening from Gila, NM. A bit west and north of Silver City. The plan is to get as far as Odessa, TX, tomorrow, and to Fort Worth, TX, sometime Saturday. I filled them in on a couple of interesting park stops, depending on the route they take across Texas (and what kind of time they want to take).

I suggested that they should stop by Monahans Sand Dunes State Park if they take the northern route on I-20, or if they take a southern route combination of I-10 and cross-country driving, to try for Caverns of Sonora. Either one is an easy side trip from the highway. It's nice to get out of the car for more than bathroom stops, meals, and gas when you're making a long trip!

I just reread what I sent earlier. What a place for a typo, when people are trying to make plans. I misspoke--sorry Big Jim--they'll be in Fort Worth on Wednesday (tomorrow) and headed out for Indiana shortly after that. They said they were planning to stop and see you.

Day 1.
LA to Casa Grande via San Diego.
Posted most of this already, except for the amazing Chocolate Mountains. Sunset behind us and on the mountains. Just like folded chocolate, poured from above.
Grackles at all the rest stops. Females mostly. Amazing chattery birds. Dancing around and posing. Wondered why they were all brown ones. Thought, with a visiters confidence they were Grackles.
Now from Texas I realize they were females. Black males all seem to be at the Texas rest stops. Dancing and chortling and swinging their tails. Should we tell them there are so many unattached lady Grackles in Arizona I wonder.
Bought a pair of shorts marked "Average"!! WOW I love that. To be continued. Cheers, Joy

Day 2.
Casa Grande to Gila, New Mexico.
The longest train I ever did see was a hundred coaches long....
First sight of a freight train. Counted the carriages. Exactly 100! How do they do that?
Do you know that the United planes have a train whistle they blow when they take off and when they land. Very dramatic.
Saw Tombstone. Not the daily gunfight though. Spent too long talking to the lady in the Western Wear shop. She used to be part of the gunfight 'till she shot herself in the foot. A blank but still painful.
Met a little girl buying a Hobby Horse. She's calling it "Bulls-eye" Glad I'm not a horse.
No music coming from the graves on Boot Hill. Heard there was. Great place anyway.
Asked directions at Lordsburg, to Gila. Pretty Mexican girl told us, "Go straight towards the mountain. Don't turn where the sign says!" Got to the sign. Couldn't see the mountain. Dark! So dark! Turned at the sign. Found Gila. Our friend, The Wise man of the Mountain, says we would have ended up in the Lordsburg Triangle. Was she an agent for another world? Boy! Were we lucky!
Stopped by the "Sobriety Squad". Torch shined in my eyes. Mustn't smile to hard. Must look serious! Wouldn't want to be arrested for being too happy. Friendly officers anyway. Surprised to find Aussies so far from home.
To be continued. Cheers, Joy

They're on the road (it's a road they've seen some of already, thanks to yesterday's "Long Way Round" to reach us) and headed toward Little Rock, Arkansas, with hopes of getting past there to Memphis, Tennessee, tonight. Nice sunny day, much better driving than in yesterday's wind and occasional rain.

Our visit was brief, but very pleasant. It was bedtime when we started poking through the books of songs--only great restraint got us out of there so everyone could get a decent night's sleep.

I've sent a few photos to Pene Azul, with instructions to start a page that will accumulate photos for each of us who send them. Then their trip photos will be contained in one place. I hope that works for you, Jeff!

Big Jim, please let us know when you hear from them. I should have asked them to give me a call when they reached their motel for the evening, to know they got as far as they intended. (I once had a friend who had passed through here call from Hope, Ark. to say that he thought he lost his wallet here, left on the roof of his car at the corner gas station that morning. He drove back, because I was closer than his home in Virginia. Amazingly, his wallet was seen by a neighbor and retreived from a small crowd at the intersection where it slid off the car. My address was in it, so he called.)

Joy and Hildebrand were able to find me in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. We ate lunch at a Chinese buffet and talked a bit. Then we ran an errand down in town before adjourning to a friend's house for a nice but all too short picking session. I then guided them across town to the bridge they needed to cross in order to be on their way through Illinois.
Very nice folks! Any other 'Cats who happen to be on their call-on list are in for a nice treat. You'll like them.

Joy and Hildebrand just left here about an hour or so ago, having come for lunch and a too-short session swapping songs. Despite my promise above, I forgot about pictures while the instruments were out, although I did get one or two just before they left, headed for Peru, Illinois to see Art Thieme.

Joy asked me TWICE to tell everyone what a wonderful time she has (they have) been having all through the trip so far, and to extend thanks to those who have helped them along the way.

We had a great time singing back and forth. Ahhh, if there had only been more time! What a great little session we all had!

Uncle_Dave O, I know just what you mean about the too short song swap! They turned out to be very nice people, and I wish we could have had them for a longer time. It is so great to have the opportunity to meet people like this, and it wouldn't have been possible except for Mudcat. It is great to meet people on line and swap information and songs, but to be able to arrange to meet them in person...............! How cool is that?!!!!!

Greg and Joy just left here. What a fine evening we just passed---talk and songs and food galore. It's been forty years plus since I last saw Mr. Hildebrand in Chicago. How is it possible that we have come so far on our separate paths and wind up so like-minded on so many topics?? And Joy could not be more aptly named. What a joy she is!! Carol and I did not want this night to end. But they are now on their way to Iowa--and a trmendous downpour just started. This must be what fell on Denver and the Colorado mountains as snow a day or so ago. Drive carefully, folks!

Anyone who insists that this Mudcat is not a real community is just completely wrong and way far off the mark. We are what we make of ourselves. This cyberworld can be filled with real comaraderie. And the actual emotions and attachments found here drive this point home for me just about every time I meet one of you folks in the flesh.

Love,

Art and Carol Thieme

Thanks for your remarks, Art. I agree totally. Not only is Mudcat a community, I think it is what helps make some of the travels of fellow Mudcatters possible. We can provide a safe and friendly place to stop along the way, and help keep the trips affordable.
