About a month to go (YAH!!)

The Program has been posted - tho ya need magnifying glasses to read it! - now we come to the bit about where we'll meet.

It's become a bit of a habit that most of us will get to Hrothgar's Hymn singing session (the best singing session in the whole Festival) on Sunday morning. Last year was a bit of a bummer cos Hrothgar couldn't attend the Festival, so JenniG & I led it. Wot fun - I was immortalised on radio continually urging everyone to have a dose of medicine - Dr Jamieson's & another tasty brew as supplied by Canberra Chris & Bruce D. And as always, a good time was had by all.

Squinting hard at the Sunday program the Hymn session is on again - & again one hour instead of the usual 90 mins - with another workshop following 10 mins later so we'll have to hurry thru al those roof-raising classics.

So, who'll be there & who is performing, & where else shall we meet?

No it doesn't - all Catters are welcome! We will be there, I will be doing my volunteering as usual although I will be finished by the time the festival starts. And Himself will be there.

I'll be at the festival, as usual, not performing, and probably not singing hymns, but I'm sure I'll see many Ozcatters there.

Mal - it's a singing session, tho one year some of the folks who attend the church service didn't realise it & had to be reminded by Roger that being asked to lead a hymn wasn't an invitation to preach.

The hymn session goes down well with singers cos many traditional (& modern) songs used hymn tunes. Danny Spooner arrived for his workshop one year & added to Amazing Grace.

I was at a funeral early last year where it was so strange to hear a classical soprano singing "Abide with me" - I was trying not to sing John Dengate's I can't abide

I'm usually found at Dennis O'Keefe's Australian singing session each lunchtime in the Session bar & at the Singing Sessions late at night.

I don't know where else I'll be as I haven't looked at the program, it's just too small fro me to read & I don't want to print it out.

You can enlarge the program (which is shown at being 43%) to 100% and it is fairly readable, even to my old eyes

Not sure where the singing room is going to be this year. The restaurant has been used for the last 10-12 years, but that's now going to be used as the Volunteers' Kitchen (probably a better use of available facilities), so the singing room might revert to the former Volunteers' Kitchen (which has the original singing room, and IMHO has better acoustics for singing). Is everybody keeping up with me here?

Now, Jenny and Sandra, who has the box of hymn books?

There were two boxes sent last year, but only one actually arrived, which is why you might have been a little short of books. The transport company rang me a week after the festival to say they couldn't deliver the second one, and what should they do with it? I have it back here now.

Roger, I gave the box of hymn books to - Julie, was it? - in volunteer transport, I collected them from her in the first place, and she said they would get back to you via her. Might be worth speaking to her?

We will take the time out from packing up our house to move, to go to the festival; we will probably need the light relief.

Well, Mal, it isn't mine either but, in addition to Sandra's comment I paraphrase a comment attributed to Wesley; "You can't let the god-botherers keep all the good tunes to themselves."

And Sandra forgot to include me as an attendee; once again I'll be volunteering in Comms (just behind JennieG in the Festival Office), this time with Daughter #1 and her friend, both of whom I'm trying to persuade to join in the hymns.

We're talking about the (Australian) National Folk Festival, which is held every year over Easter Weekend, and there are people who like to sing hymns at Easter, and there are people at a folk festival who just like to sing, so it all comes together.

Don't worry about it Soldier boy; a lot of Oz things are likely to come across as strange and foreign to people who are not from Oz. But you'd still be welcome. And the hymns are quite eclectic. I was about to describe them as "catholic" but the context could confuse even the well informed.
