In an article about the Golden Globes there was a discussion about Brad and Angelina (these are two somewhat famous movie people, in case you haven't heard), and how happy they were, blah, blah, presumably because they found six babysitters for the evening. Anyway, there was a reference to their PDA -- personal data assistant? Then I discover (asked someone in the know about all things Hollywood) that this means Public Display of Affection.

Are there any other recent acronyms that Mudcatters can share (inquiring minds would like to know) --

When I was growing up it stood for Personal Digital Assistant.

But, on reflection, perhaps I like Public Display of Affection better.

I thought of opening the door for her, but then I looked down at my bracelet and thought, "What would Satan do?". So, I slammed the door in her face and bit the heads off all of the lab rats.

So Billy came over and asked me to dance, I thought about but then I looked at my bracelet and thought, "What would Satan do?". So, I said no and then set the school gym on fire!

What Would Scooby Do?

Seen on many bumper stickers, this is a parody of the phrase "What Would Jesus Do?"
I looked at the wallet on the ground and asked myself, "WWSD?" I stuffed the thing in my pocket and went to buy some Scooby Snacks.

Generaly used when either a moral or ittelectual decision must be made, and/or a correct or elaborate solution has been made.

Actually Jenny G, Bobad,and GIok are the only ones who have actually written acronyms, Theothers are abbreviations or initials. An acronym is a word that is composed of the firt letters of a series of words describing something, Radar, Laser, Fubar, Sonar, Snafu, etc. I know it isaminor point, but I just heard a program onNPR about this exact thing last weekend.

Jimmyt is right. NASA is an acronym because you pronounce it "nassa"—you don't pronounce it "en-ay-ess-ay".

FBI is an abbreviation because you pronounce it "eff-bee-eye"—you don't pronounce it "f'bih".

We live in an age of abbreviations. LP, CD, VHS, DVD, MP3...

Instead of inventing new ones, I'd like to get rid of the ones we have.

For instance, I think we should abandon the term CD and start calling them "records." Why not? Etymologically, a "record" is something that is recorded, right? So it fits. And "record" isn't being used much.

First 78- and 45-rpm disks were called "records." Then long-playing records were invented, and people called them LPs (I suppose because it was too awkward to call them "thirty-three-and-a-thirds"). After a while, they quit calling them LPs and just called them records, and at the same time, they started called the 45s "singles" (which is odd; they usually contain two songs, so why don't they call them "doubles"?). Now we're ready to make the change again, in my opinion.

Vista is an improvement over XP, naming-wise (never mind the quality of the software). At least "Vista" is a word.

Three cheers for Blu-Ray. It's a much better name than HD-DVD (or whatever the hell else we'll call them).

and LP means (meant) Long Playing
because there were 5-10 songs on a side.
