In about 3/4 hour, friends should arrive to take us to the airport to head for Las Vegas and Death Valley; so I won't be here to give the definitive answers to any of the disputes for 9 days, unless I come accross a public computer in a hotel.

When you get tired of losing your money or listening to awful entertainers, check out the desert wildflowers.

Many desert areas have gotten an unusually large mount of rain which means lotsa flowers this year...

Uh-huh; there should be some rain while we're there, too, do things should be alive. Just hoping it isn't so stormy so much it limits light for photography.

Thanks for the wildflower link, pdq.

Last time I was dragged to Vegas, I visited a state park west of town and saw a roadrunner and other interesting birds. Seems to me the park had 'Lamb' in its name.

I also found six kinds of bird in the palm trees in front of the Luxor.

(I have touchy hearing. I needed hearing protection just to walk across a casino floor.)

Tule Creek Park is now known as Floyd Lamb State Park.

The lowest point and the hottest area of all is Furnace Creek in Death Valley, so the wildflowers will come and go earliest there. Best to go there first.

Here is a guide to...

Actually I love Las Vegas just for the kitsch ~~ absolute kitsch capital of the world, to the extent that they've pretty well made it an art form. Just walk around & feast your eyes. We didn't even put a quarter into a machine our whole time there.

When you get to Death Valley, listen for the quiet. Death Valley has to be one of the most impressively noiseless places there is.

Home again, a couple of hours ago. Lots and lots of fun. I expected kitch in Las Vegas, and I knew that a lot of it was on a large scale, but I guess I never expected the immensity of places like Caesars Palace, or just how far over the top it all is. I had planned to allow a hundred dollars, just once in life, to see how I would come out on the slot machines. I got cold feet, and just started with $50.; I came out with $50.29. I figured I was getting the hang of it, so I sat down with $100.; finished with $116.10. Put in $50.00 more the next day and gained another thirteen dollars and some odd cents. I didn't become a gambling addict, but I had some laughs out of it.
Death Valley had just had some rain. There were a few billion little purple flowers, a few trillion little yellow ones, and scatterings of assorted others. There are spots that look like the last forsaken corner of hell, but lots more that are absolutely beautiful. If you ever get out there, do not miss Dante's View, Zabriskie Point, or the mile walk up Golden Canyon.
