Apart from Mercy COrps etc..any good suggestions?

I think I could take in 2 refugees but they would have to be nimble enough to sleep in an attic situation, and they would be staying right on the ocean on a sandspit, so they might not enjoy that aspect. I know there are plenty of people who would take people in.

All they need to do is start putting them on cruise ships. Some of these people have good amounts of money and could pay their ways. It is not necessary to only rely on air, which drives me crazy when you are surrounded by water. And don't tell me the ports are wrecked. I know they are. How did people get to big ships before? We do it again. mg

For me it is Prayers and whatever I can donate money wise. I am going to check the red cross to see if they have something going on

It may take some more time to sort out the most effective and efficient means through which to help. Right now, they are unable to get into many areas. Financial donations will surely be needed and welcomed, but until the infrastructure is in place to provide aid, no amount of money will help. The many, many aid organizations mobilizing, however, will welcome having the funds at hand so they can go ahead and purchase supplies, and effectively begin staging to move in as quickly as is possible.

Would suggest that if people already are in tune with relief organizations they know and trust, go ahead and make donations now that can be used to deploy aid and assistance as soon as it is possible to deliver needed basic supplies.

For myself, my financial donations will go to the Episcopal and Quaker relief organizations because I am familiar with them, know they are efficient regarding administrative costs, and generally positioned to provide effective direct aid to meet basic needs locally and quickly. I'm sure there are many other organizations able to do the same.

There will also be long-term needs on a more macro level that large organizations are probably better equipped to handle - and that also have higher and less efficient administrative costs.

If I lived on the west coast of the USA, and was able to offer instrumental or other in-kind help, but not money, I would probably be exploring if I had anything or any services to offer to the fishermen and families and fisher communities on the North American west coast who lost boats, harbors, nets and traps, and their means of livelihood to the tsunami.

I have not read about bad news in fishing communities other than Brookings, Oregon,w hich got smashed and the crab fleet was hurt. Are there other places? I mostly get Oregon news although I live in Washington.

Anyway, I think we do not have the luxury of time in these disasters..I think some former NVA with a whole lot of bamboo could make bridges over rubble to wherever there is water..strong enough to walk on for sure..and get some either goods in or people out of those shelters where they are running out of food and water..and to say nothing of the nuclear situation. We are not nimble and we need to be. Thank God I have not heard the Red Cross (and I have great respect for them) saying only send money don't send stuff..I say stuff is what is going to keep people alive if people can figure out how to get it to places...and Korea is pretty darn close and they are very clever and can do people. I think frankly that the Japanese are overwhelmed logistically, but also it seems somewhat paralyzed from the emotional trauma..others have to step in, unless radiation makes it too unsafe. mg

The Japanese are a beautiful people. I think that our Canadian government should offer to have them all come over. We have lots of land that we could share or give. Then the Island of Japan can sink if it wishes. What a crock I know, and it will never be offered, but why not!!

what can we give them ... moral, econimical and logistical support. They must not feel abandoned.

The Japanese are a very resilient, innovative, strong people. I hope and feel they will come out this much stronger, and much wiser even though a part of their country will probably be uninhabital for years to come.

If my predictions are true I'm certain they will no longer rely on nuclear and fossil fuel to produce their energy. They will be a showcase for the world on how to exist with and respect nature and foremost through their inovations how to safely harness energy by effective solutions which have zero impact on the environment. We will learn through them.

They are good thoughts, biLL. In fact, all the thoughts on the thread are good.

However, imo, the Japanese government will not ask. They will imply. We will infer. The people ARE the culture. Just land it there when planes can land, an' say ya hafta leave it. Flight emergency involving 1000 planes. Seems workable to me.

And the UN is doing what?

Can the rubble be used as biofuel if there are good enough filters? They need electricity and heat and they need to be clearing the stuff. Where does it go? Metal can be recycled of course. mg

To a country who has built nuclar power stations over an unstable fault in the earth's crust, I think we should donate some of our longsighted and brilliant intellectuals. For example Alan Waters could sort out their economy.
