Subject: RE: From Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul & Mary) From: Big Ballad Singer Date: 27 Jul 11 - 10:28 PM From Mr. DeChristopher's statement before at his sentencing: "In these times of a morally bankrupt government that has sold out its principles, this is what patriotism looks like. With countless lives on the line, this is what love looks like, and it will only grow. The choice you are making today is what side are you on." Those are some inspiring and utterly brilliant words. |
Subject: RE: From Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul & Mary) From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 28 Jul 11 - 12:06 AM The law is truly an ass! Surely the officers of the court deserve nothing but contempt in this case! |
Subject: RE: From Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul & Mary) From: Stilly River Sage Date: 28 Jul 11 - 12:30 AM Bill McKibben wrote a good essay about this a few days ago. It was published in a Utah paper. SRS |
Subject: RE: From Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul & Mary) From: Donuel Date: 28 Jul 11 - 12:00 PM THE jUDGE SAID "Since you bid as a protester, you are going to jail." So, if a bidder did it our of criminal fraud, he would not go to jail. Or if an oil company decided not to pay, they would not go to jail. But since Tim bid as a protest, he is getting the book thrown at him. |
Subject: RE: From Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul & Mary) From: BTNG Date: 28 Jul 11 - 12:09 PM He knew perfectly well what he was getting into when he did it |
Subject: RE: From Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul & Mary) From: Desert Dancer Date: 28 Jul 11 - 09:42 PM I value what he did and why he did it, but, Donuel, he was given a 2-year, $10,000 sentence, instead of the 10-year, $1,000,000 sentence that the prosecutor wanted him to have. So, no, he did not have the book thrown at him. A tenet of civil disobedience is acceptance of the consequences of your actions in the existing legal setting, in the interest of drawing attention to the need for change. ~ Becky in Long Beach |
