Thanks, Sins and maeve. Some of he Aleutians are more than a thousand miles from Juneau so we didn't feel anything. We normally experience one or two tremors a month, they say, but they are tiny and we are not usually aware of them.

Glad it was "remote".

Ya know, the statement of not being aware of the many small quates minds me of being up Kent County way back in the bush. If ya sit quietly, ya can hear them, constantly, and sometimes feel them slightly.

Thanks Ebbie. I thought of you when I read the story about the woman who punched a bear in the face to save her dog. She was very lucky.

Lady over in Kodiak shot a bear with a .22 Colt Woodsman pistol, back in the early '60s I think it was, to save her kid. Bear dropped dead on the spot, being hit in the eye. Like punching the bear, this is not a recommended thing but sometimes you get lucky.

Just a day or so ago, a kid got lucky by punching a polar bear in the nose. He got mauled badly but he survived. His buddy wasn't so lucky. There were 7 or 8 kids I think. Scandinavia.

That was Ebbie, punched that bear, SINS! Oh no...Ebbie whacked hers with a broom! There are plenty of them around right now. I was walking home the other night when I came upon a cub hollerin' for its mama! Luckily, the sow was right around the corner waiting for it, and I was a respectable distance away. Reunited, they moseyed on up the hill. No boxing gloves required.

Got some around here, too. I let them know I'm coming and I really don't want a confrontation any more than they do.

Some years ago, back when I was an able backpacker in the Washington State Olympic Mountains, I lost a long time hiking partner. After probably doing 700 miles together, cutting the Olympics in half East to West, and North to south, she finally quit me because she figgured out that the black bear was my totem animal.

I can't dispute it ... because I've been on a first name basis with the little 300 pound black bears. They've never threatened me, nor I them. In fact I've enjoyed their company often.

The last event happened as we were heading out from the Encahnted Valley after a nine day hike. I came up a swail and came face to face, maybe 20', from this beautiful male, in full September glossy coat.

I stopped and started talking to him, but my partner wasn't paying attention and she walked right into my back. I said, quietly, "bear ... stand still."

She freaked and turned and ran. Her boyfriend was able to grab her pack and stop her. I walked toward the bear slowly, quietly talking while th other two tippy toed back down the trail.

After a while, the bear got bored and wandered off.

I prefer some bears to most people. CHEERS, bob(deckman)nelson

I went out with a nursing student at uni... she was an animal! I DEFINTELY preferred her.

Sorry... just wishing I was young and, this time, smart again.

Me hat me coat eh.
