BS: Heroes?

Or "grinders," "hoagies," "subs," whatever. No, actually not about stuff you put in your mouth.

So, is it just me? Or does it seem like most of history's "heroes" are military victors, as opposed to those who worked without weapons in the pursuit of peace? Maybe it's just me??

I guess if you are putting the word in quotes, then the word is whatever you say it is.

Certainly Joseph has another definition of "hero." and then there are sports "heroes" and the "real life heroes" in Readers Digest who used to give their kidneys to drowning babies for use as floatation devices.

Certainly if you were in France or the Philippines in mid 1940's or Kuwait in the early 1990's the people who drove out the occupiers might have looked like heroes to you. But obviously there were places where they would not have been so venerated.

I've said it before: my heroes are people like the guy who lost both legs but keeps on going, the single mother who works to keep her family together despite everything, the firefighter, the cop on the beat, the guy who works in the steel mill or the welding shop to help his aging parents, the doctor in the ER.... All the people who keep going in spite of everything.

While I heartily agree that these are all true heroes, I would love to hear your rationale for the assumption that this would be mutually exclusive with the concept that soldiers can be heroes.

What about, for example, the guy who throws himself on a grenade and saves the lives of a dozen comrades?

Does the fact that he carries a weapon and sometimes must use it automatically preclude recognition of his altruistic act?

Doesn't your cop on the beat carry a weapon also and sometimes have to use it..........Hmmm?

Yeah, it's just you. Fact is, war heroes are celebrated for good reason. But, they are also used as carrots by the rich... pathetic. Peace heros should be celebrated and we should all work far more than we do for peace. I am willing to do that. Even though it don't matter shit because the rich fuckers are just gonna stay rich and keep the poor poor.

That's their job. Can't cite them for it. Dog eat dog, eh? It shouldn't be that way but who can fight the rich? If you have a plan, I'll consider signing up.

I said I imagine that his definition of "hero" would be different from Saulgoldie's in the first post.

In fact I would bet on it since I remember that I had a debate with joesepp about Joseph Campbell in another thread.

But how is that a "slam?"

Watched a superb documentary last night about lifeboatmen, coastguards etc.

IMO Those guys are the real heroes!
