Does anyone know any songs thought to originate from there? My family are from thereabouts. Have found stuff from Tideswell, but it would be great if anyone had them from Gt Hucklow.

Thanks.

I'm not aware of and specifically from Gt Hucklow but you say your family is from "thereabouts". Personally, I would have said that Tideswell is close enough, being the main settlemen, with the villages of Gt Hucklow, Little Hucklow, Wormhill, Litton, Wardlow etc. being "thereabouts".

A similar distance away is the plague village of Eyam which must have several songs and down the hill is the Hope Valley where I'm sure you'll find more.

I know it's not quite the same thing but years and years ago I made a song about a woman from Great Hucklow. I haven't sung it for almost as many years though!
I've also cobbled together a couple of songs based on stories and so on from 'thereabouts'.
None of this is on vinyl or cd however, and to cap it all I moved away from the UK and the folk scene 35 years ago.

Well done Lynn H. You couldn't pass them on to a better bloke, Derbyshire through and through.

Sadly there's not the great treasury of Derbyshire songs that some of us would hope for - probably because most of the collectors didn't spend much time there. this thread explores some of the ground. The Roud index lists a lot of children's songs from the county.

There are well-known carolling traditions in Foolow and Castleton, and the above thread lists a song from Tideswell. Also there's a good version of 'Three Ravens' traceable back to Stoney Middleton.

Back in the 1960s/70s etc. Frank Sutton and Gerald Short(?) were both active collectors and makers of Derbyshire songs. Both have almost certainly passed on by now. I'd suggest getting in touch with John Tams who, during his time with Muckram Wakes was involved with Derbyshire songs and who also knew Frank and Gerald. He may have some ideas as to songs from Gt. Hucklow 'and thereabouts'.
There's always Llewellyn Jewitt's book on Derbyshire/Peak District songs and traditions.

My feeling for Derbyshire songs (and I've lived there) is that they fall into categories of the obvious one, old but generic songs localised, mid- 19th century semi- literary or selfconsciously "dialect" compositions on local subjects (paralelling the Oxford Movement "revival" of well- dressing), modern (later 20th-21st century) compositions of a folk- nostalgic flavour (some of my own included), and the King of Rome. There are also songs about mining disasters, in that bit of Derbyshire (actually at least two separate bits) most people prefer not to talk about.

There must be a folk song from Great Hucklow about gliders.

Living not a million miles from Great Hucklow and (many years ago) having flown at Camp Hill, I think you'll find that that particular song requires you to have a fan on the front of your aircraft. A more appropriate song might therefore be "Up, Up and Away".

Perhaps one about the, late, (in)famous local resident, Don Rowarth?
