Subject: ADD: Anybody Seen My Kitty? From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Nov 15 - 12:56 AM A librarian friend asked me about this song. Anybody know where it comes from? Are there other verses? ANYBODY SEEN MY KITTY? (Songwriter: ?) Anybody seen my kitty Anybody seen my cat He came home with a kink in his tail And I knew that he'd been fighting Up in Finnegan's alley Down in Finnegan's flat Kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty Anybody seen my cat from http://praiseinmotion.net/anybody-seen-my-kitty/ Publisher Praise in Motion's YouTube Video of the song says This song is traditional, the arrangement and instrumentation was done by Christina Cook Lee. Doesn't seem like a "traditional" song to me, but maybe so. |

(as recorded by Tex Ritter, 1954) Has anybody seen my kitty, Has anybody seen my cat? She has a wart at the end of her tail, Now what do you think of that? Down in Mulligan's Alley, Up in Finnegan's Flat, Kitty, Kitty, Kitty, Puss, Puss, Puss, Has anybody seen my cat? I looked in the cellar, And I looked in the attic, And I looked in every tree; I hope she's only playing Cat and mouse with me. Has anybody seen my kitty, Has anybody seen my cat? She has a wart at the end of her tail, Has anybody seen my cat? [instrumental break] Has anybody seen my kitty, Has anybody seen my cat? She has a wart at the end of her tail, Now what do you think of that? I even looked in the Callahan's Bakery, And talked to the butcher, Pat; Kitty, Kitty, Kitty, Puss, Puss, Puss, Has anybody seen my cat? I'd scream and a-holler And get hot in the collar Every time she'd start to "meow," I'd give a million dollars To hear her meowing now. Has anybody seen my kitty, Has anybody seen my cat? She has a wart at the end of her tail, Has anybody seen my cat? Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6lkK_vkTsE |

Subject: ADD: Has Anybody Seen Our Cat? From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Nov 15 - 03:11 AM Gee, maybe it will never end.... HAS ANYBODY SEEN OUR CAT? (T.W. Conner / James T. Powers, 1899) I'm upset now, let me tell you why, Our old cat sneaked away, upon the sly My old Ma declares it is a sign that bad luck's coming, and two to one it's mine! I've been wond'ring who I am to blame for sneaking the bacon and the brawn and the can of milk and beef steak pie, When they're missing on a Sunday morn! Every night, as soon as we're in bed, All his old pals gather overhead; Gently calling for him to come out and play a game of leapfrog 'round the gutter of the spout. In despair, I went to the police, They told me not to feel so blue, He might turn up in a penny mince pie or With his wife, in a day or two! Has anybody seen our cat? Has anybody seen our cat? He's got a bit o'black on the end of his tail and the skin all off where he's been fighting. Last Sunday morning we miss'd him from the mat: - Puss, puss, puss, puss, meat, meat, meat! Has anybody seen our cat? And this recording has similarities, but it's not the same: https://archive.org/details/BurtShepard-HasAnybodySeenOurCat1902 |
Subject: ADD version: Has Anybody Seen Our Cat? From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Nov 15 - 03:29 AM Here's a YouTube recording with a transcript (with my corrections): Burt Shepard - Has Anybody Seen Our Cat? 1901 AKA Has Anybody Seen My Cat? Composer T. W. Connor - Lyricist James T. Powers Burt Shepard was born in The United States: Born 1854 Died 1913. Although born in the United States, Burt Shepard was primarily known for the recordings he made in England. Most of his repertoire consisted of remakes of so-called "coon" songs and comical pieces for the European market taken from American recordings. He was particularly known for his covers of George W. Johnson's two hits, "The Laughing Song" and "Whistling Coon." Shepard was known to have recorded as early as 1898 while his last known session occurred in 1908. HAS ANYBODY SEEN OUR CAT? (T.W. Connor & James T. Powers) [as recorded in 1901 by Burt Shepard] I'm upset now; let me tell you why, Our old tom cat's done and run away. My old gal declares that it's a sign Somebody's number's up and two to one it's mine. I've been wondering who I am to blame For sneaking the bacon and the brawn (?) And the young man lodger's tender steaks When they're missing on a Sunday morn. CHORUS Has anybody seen our cat? Has anybody seen our cat? He's got a bit of black on the end of his tail And the skin's all off where he's been fighting Last Sunday morning we missed him from the mat Work! Work! Work! Work! Meat! Meat! Meat! Has anybody seen our cat? How we loved that cat nobody knows Put butter on his feet and pepper on his nose When he caught cold, sure I gave myself a job Covered him with poulters and set him on the hob (?) When the toothache troubled him so bad And I found little Tommy couldn't eat I tied up his face, put tobacco in his ear And got another cat to chew his meat. CHORUS I never thought he'd leave his happy home Though after the gals he often used to roam I've sent tripe hounds out upon his track I'm doing everything to try and get him back Got two cods heads stuck up on a pole And nailed up a kipper on the door And written underneath it 'Welcome home' And a promise not to kick him any more. CHORUS |
