where is the Red House

This is a very lazy request.

I keep on hearing about "The Red House" a venue (pub?) in Sheffield(UK) Can anyone tell me where it is .... ...in relation to other Sheffield City land marks.

I should look for the address and then through the A-Z but this way is easier and probably quicker.

what goes on at The Red House and when?

This is no help but when I had a brief spell of living in Sheffield (Hunter's Bar), the Red House was reccommended to me as a session venue but I never got there or found the place. I did go to Fagin's a few times where the music was excellent though - is that fiddler - ?Patrick Walker? still playing there?

Roger: Get that A-Z!  Meanwhile: from the University Roundabout (Upper Hanover St/Brook Hill), walk down Brook Hill-Broad Lane past Jessop's Hospital; turn left onto Siddall St., then right onto Solly Street.  It's on the left maybe 100 yards down.  Tuesday nights is the University Ceilidh Society session (inclined to be fast), Wednesdays is the SRFN session (English music, repertoire mostly from regional ms. collections, unusual in that it starts 8 to 8.30 and finishes by 10, and in that there are often visible music stands.  The pub has recently changed hands, so I'm not sure about the rest of the week, but will be checking up soon.  There is probably at least one other session running at the moment.

Jon: Pat still shows up at Fagan's, but I'm not sure which nights just now.

Can't add anymore to Malcolm's directions. But I do remember having a very , very good St Patrick's Day in there a few years ago.

We used to call the area "The Trippett Lane Triangle", because people could disappear into it for days on end.  The Red House was known as "The Irish Embassy" in days gone by, but that was before my time...

IHave seen in a book somewhere - a set of tunes entitled The trippet Lane triangle -

One was going down the dog ( Relating to the Dog and Partridge, One was something about The Grapes and the last about Fagins. Unfortunately I didn't buy the book - only giggled over the song titles - I beieve there was also - 'The jig of Cliches'. I am sure it was on the SYFN stand at one of their events - but it was a wee while ago.

Then when Linda just mentioned that she would soon be leaving the Harlequin for the Red House everyone seemed to be asking 'where is...

Is the Red House in Solly Street still standing? Best pint of Wards in Sheffield. I was led to believe it was demolished about 15 years ago? If it is still there, then a visit to Sheffield is way overdue.
I went on 3 or 4 times in the late 70's early 80's. Once a year we'd have a special day excursion on the railway, £5 return to Sheffield or York. Always got off at Sheffield as we had 2 hours more drinking time.
The landlady's name was Eileen and she kept a visitors book. Lovely lady. On my third visit there was a different lady behind the bar, I asked after Eileen and was told she had died. I asked the new one her name, "Eileen" she said smiling, "Will you sign my visitors book?" Dewey eyed Michael duly signed.

There's an Old Time session most fridays, where a few of us sit and play appalachian tunes from about 8:45 onwards. There's usually one, often 2 or 3 fiddlers a banjo or two, a banjo uke, one or 2 guitars, maybe a mandolin or a bass. The standard is pretty good most times. Of course in the OT tradition we stay in the same key most of the night!
There seems to be a temporary landlord in at the moment, so we're a little worried about whether the pub will stay open - we're looking around for a possible substitute. There may not be a session for the next two fridays as some of us are going to some fiddle and banjo workshops in Gainsborough with Dave Bing and Dwight Diller from West Virginia.
It's usually best to ring up Bill Cox 0114 2438502 about 6:30ish on friday to find out if the session's happening.

A bunch of Brits play Appalachian tunes, Skarpi in Iceland play Irish tunes, Scottish bands play Cajun tunes, Americans play Renaissance music...it seems that folk music, like prophets, is not without honor except in its own land.
