I have many pieces of traditional music on my computer which I would like to share with the Mudcat. However, they are in a little program called EZPNO which doesn't seem to work with the "MIDI to text program" from here.

So I decided to try Noteworthy. Now, after pounding my head on the wall of their instructions (written, apparently, by someone at the Pentagon)I would like to ask: 1) how do I put in the dots which mean "repeat"? 2) how do I get it to play the music out loud? I have gone to Options and selected every possible output device, twice. 3) how do I put chord names on piece, such as guitar players use?

(If the program can't do these simple things, I say the heck with it.)

Ah, Leenia, Noteworthy does all those things, and does them very well. Explore the "insert" menu on Noteworthy, and you'll find all sorts of goodies.
I hate to see you transcribe a lot of stuff by hand if you already have it in another program. I haven't heard of EZPNO - what format does it save files in? If you can tell us a little about the EZPNO program, maybe we can save you some work. You don't have to use the MIDITEXT program if it's difficult for you - see my instructions at the beginning of the Please Post Tunes Here (click) thread.

I see that much of the information at "Please Post Tunes Here" has to do with folksongs with lyrics. The music I have collected doesn't have lyrics. Most of it is dance music. Are you interested in that?

The EZPIANO program produces MIDI files. I play the tune on a small piano-type keyboard, and EZPIANO and I, working together, produce sheet music for the piece. The default extension for a piece is .PNO, but I can also save the piece in MIDI form with a .MID extension.

The trouble is that if I try to convert somebody else's MIDI file to text, it works. Examples: pieces that the maker of EZPIANO put on, or pieces off the net. But the pieces I put on don't convert. What a rob!

I even had a friend over who is a senior programmer with Sprint, and she couldn't get it to work either.

I can't put a piece on e-mail, my e-mail isn't that sophistiicated. I will have to use the INternet.

I'm sure that Joe will have some sage advice, but my first suggestion when using NoteWorthy is to go to the File menu and then press press Import. If it finds your nominated MIDI (.mid) file OK it will ask you a few questions. Just keep pressing OK to the questions and your notation should open.

If it won't open a file that you've created then Import a .mid that you've got from the Web. If this file opens fine there must be some (hopefully) little problem with your home-made files.

If NoteWorthy doesn't work it sounds like you have a bodgy copy of NoteWorthy, but it's probably a bit earlier to speculate.

Actually, in the new version it is "file,open": then you have to select midi as the file type...

Try it with your ezpiano files...if they come into Noteworthy, then noteworthy should be able to send them back out as midi's that will work with miditxt - though if you have a working midi, that is all you need to be able to send it to AlanofOz

But MidiNotate has always worked for me
I am always interested in new music to play leeneia - and I have enjoyed listening to Jon Freemans version of Donegal Mazurka that you brought to our attention. Thanks

dO YOU USE A mAC?

A MIDI file made on a Macintosh may likely have 128 extra bytes prepended to it (ie, a Mac Binary Header). If you remove those first 128 bytes (ie, all the bytes before you see the first 4 characters of 'M', 'T', 'h', and 'd') then you'll end up with a standard MIDI file. Use a hEXeDITOR program that edits binary (ie, not text) files to chop off the first 128 bytes (ie, characters).

I tried to make Noteworthy import an EZPIANO file, but I got the dreaded message "This program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down." (I hope the FBI was looking the other way.)

Out of curiosity I decided to see how many pieces of music I have stored in EZPIANO, and the answer is 587.

Maybe I will just wait a while and try again.

Looks like whatever ezpiano does with midi files it isn't standard

that's what I was afraid of. However, Noteworthy refuses to acknowledge that EZPIANO even exists on my computer, so it's not entirely innocent either.

You can try going to the Noteworthy website. They have a FAQ file page, a User Tips page and a Forum page. I had a quick look through each but couldn't find anything related to what you want to know but you could either post it to the Forum as a question and/or contact user support to see if they know the answer. With 587 files to convert it must be worth a try.
