Subject: Lyr Add: 'I Want To Be A College Man' Trad. Song
From: John M.
Date: 27 Apr 05 - 05:28 PM

Hello everyone,

Below is a traditional song titled:  'I Want to a College Man'  (recording)

              1.  Do you sing this song?
              2.  If yes, when and where did you learn it?
              3.  Would you be willing to sing it for folklore purposes over the phone?

Any help is appreciated.

Sincerely,

John Mehlberg

I WANT TO BE A COLLEGE MAN  (recording)

I want be a college man
Mmmmm and a little bit more
I want to be a fraternity man
Mmmmm and a little bit more
I want to be a Sig Ep man
Who could ask for more
Then I'll have whats coming to me and
Mmmmm and a little bit
Mmmmm and a little bit
Mmmmm and a little bit more

I want to date a college girl
Mmmmm and a little bit more
I want to date a sorority girl
Mmmmm and a little bit more
I want to date a (DG, THETA, DZ, KAPPA, AZD, PHI MU) GIRL
Who could ask for more
Then I'll have what's coming to me and
Mmmmm and a little bit
Mmmmm and a little bit
Mmmmm and a Whole lot more

Notes:  According to this google search, this song is not common.   Although this song seems to be primarily a fraternity song, it was also sung by Chi Alpha Nu sorority members in 1945 (see here) and there is a Navy WAVE version (see here).

Here is a 1927 text of this song.
~

I'D LIKE TO BE A FRIEND OF YOURS

I'd like to be a friend of yours,
Um-m and a little bit more;
I'd like to be a pal of yours,
Um-m and a little bit more.
I'd like to be a little flower,
A-bloomin' round your door;
Then I'd have all that's comin' to me,
Um-m and a little bit,
Um-m and a little bit,
Um-m and a little bit more.

MMM AND A LITTLE BIT MORE

I want a red canoe,
M-m-m and a little bit more,
I want a big full moon,
M-m-m and little bit more,
I want my very own girl,
And I'll not ask for more,
I'll have all that's comin' to me,
M-m-m and a little bit
M-m-m and a little bit
M-m-m and a little bit more.

I got a red canoe,
M-m-m and little bit more,
I got my big full moon,
M-m-m and little bit more,
I got my very own girl,
And I'll not ask for more,
I have all that's comin' to me,
M-m-m and little bit
M-m-m and little bit
M-m-m and little bit more.

Underneath the bamboo,
Underneath the bamboo tree,
Room enough for you, my darling
Room emough for one, two, three, four,
And when we marry, happy we'll be,
Underneath the bamboo, bamboo,
Underneath the bamboo tree.

Red Canoe Song

Mmm, and a little bit more.
For then I’d had all things coming to me,

Houghteling, Houghteling,
U-Rah, rah, Camp Houghteling,
Praise to thee we sing;
Praise to thee our camp beloved.
U-Rah, rah, Camp Houghteling.

I want to be a friend of yours,
Um-m-m, and a little bit more.
I want to be a pal of yours,
Um-m-m, and a little bit more.
I want to help you all I can,
Um-m-m, and a little bit more.
I want to do all I can for you.
Um-m-m, and a little bit; um-m-m, and a little bit;
Um-m-m, and a whole lot more.

Given the date when this thread was started, I doubt the original poster is still interested, but the thread has missed the original source, which was substantially modified to produce the camp song versions.

From the Traditional Ballad Index entry for the song I collectively labelled "Mmm, And a Little Bit More":

The original "And a Little Bit More" was written by Alfred Bryan (words) and Fred Fisher (music), published by T. B. Harms in 1907; it was recorded by Arthur Collins and separately by Collins & Harlan; it was a fairly significant hit in 1907 (Edward Foote Gardner, Popular Songs of the Twentieth Century: Volume I -- Chart Detail & Encyclopedia 1900-1949, Paragon House, 2000, p. 276, estimates that this was the the #4 song in America in June 1907) -- but it was substantially changed to make it into the camp song (e.g. the "Mmm" replaces an instrumental chord). It's not clear what other changes happened in that process.

I want to be a college girl, M-m-m and a little bit more
I want to be a sorority girl, M-m-m and a little bit more
I want to be an Alpha Xi, then I'll ask no more
Then I'll have all that's comin' to me
M-m-m and a little bit, M-m and a little bit, M-m and a little bit more

I want to be a friend to you, M-m-m and a little bit more
I want to be a sister to you, M-m-m and a little bit more
I want to be the Alpha Xi that you've been waiting for
Then I'll have all that's comin' to me

I'm pretty sure I found either the Collins or the Collins and Harlan recording on YouTube. It took some real folk processing to produce some of the more modern versions. :-)

56. PALS

Pals, dear old pals, we’ll always be.
Sharing together friendships that never, ever, ever, sever.
Faithful and true, we’ll be to you.
Forevermore, we’ll be just pals, dear old pals.
I wanna be a friend of yours.
Um, and a little bit more,
I wanna be a pal of yours,
Um, and a little bit more.
I wanna be that little light,
Shining ’round your door.
I wanna help you all I can.
Um, and a little bit,
Um, and a little bit,
Um, and a little bit more.
I wanna be your buddy, buddy,
Though the road be smooth or rutty.
I wanna be a pal of yours,
Um, and a little bit,
Um, and a little bit,
Um, and a little bit more.
Somebody’s been here before,
Giving you lots of love.
T’was no inspiration
Sent from Heaven above.
That kiss you gave me,
Sure was a winner,
But it was no beginner,
’Cause somebody’s been here before.
I wonder who?

I'd like to be a friend of yours, M---And a little bit more.
I'd like to be a pal of yours, M---And a little bit more,
I'd like to be a little flower growing round your door,
I'd like to give you everything I've got and a little bit,

I'd like to have a birch canoe, M---and a little bit more,
I'd like to have a big round moon, M---and a little bit more,

20 A. Sung by Tom Dexter of the Lambda Chi Alpha
fraternity at DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana, on December 29,
1963# Dexter's text is somewhat longer than the average variant
(which usually contains only about two verses). Although sometimes
sung as a "formal" fraternity song, it nevertheless is a favorite with
the members on more relaxed occasions. It is customary to insert
one's own favorite sorority where one presumably is dating, or would
like to date, in the third verse where the Alpha Phi group is named.
At this point it often becomes a contest between members to see who
can shout out his sorority the loudest.

I wanna be a college boy, hmm, and a little bit more,
I wanna be a college boy, now who could ask for more.
I wanna go to DPU, now who could ask for more.
Then I'll have all that's coming to me, and hmm,
and a little bit, hmn, and a little bit, hmm, and a little bit more.

I wanna be a fraternity man, hmm, and a little bit more,
I wanna be a fraternity man, now who could ask for more.
I wanna be a Lambda Chi, now who could ask for more.
Then I'll have all that's coming to me,
and hmm and a little bit, hmm, and a little bit, hmm, and a little bit more,

I wanna date a sorority girl, hmm, and a little bit more.
I wanna date a sorority girl, now who could ask for more.
I wanna date an Alpha Phi, now who could ask for more.
Then I'll have all that's coming to me, and hmm,
and a little bit, hmm, and a little bit, hmm, and a little bit more.

I wanna be a friend of yours, hmm, and a little bit more,
I wanna be a friend of yours, now who could ask for more.
I wanna be a clinging vine climbing up your wall.
Then I'll have all that's coming to me, and hmm,
and a little bit, hmm, and a little bit, hmm, we'll have a ball.

20 B. [Tom] Dexter indicated that sometimes the DePauw
Lambda Chi's would sing a somewhat bawdier variant in their off
moments, usually when someone was drunk and feeling good.
I wanna be a college man, hmm, and a little bit more,
I wanna be a college man and get the campus whore.
I wanna be that college man, now who could ask for more.
Then I’ll get all that's coming to me, and hmm, and a
little bit, hmm, and a little bit, hmm, and a little bit more

20 C. In the fall of 1963, Army recruiters stopped at the DePauw campus
and distributed literature headlining, "You too can be an Action Guy.”
The Lambda Chi's thereupon parodied the song again to:
I wanna be an Action Guy, hmm, and a little bit more,
I wanna be an Action Guy and go away to war.
I wanna be an Action Guy kicking down your door.
Then I'll get all that's coming to me, and hmm, and a little bit,
hmm, and a little bit, hmm. I'll rape your wife.
