Okay. Am I the only one who thought that thread title "Need Anvil" read "Need Advil'?

For those who don't know, 'Advil' is a brand name for an over the counter medication that's like Tylenol or aspirin but is made up of something else, I can't say what. Whatever it has in it, Advil really works for my bursitis.

That's why I need Advil.

I also found myself getting uptight when people worked my very last nerve and I'd say "It's Advil time!"

Some people take Advil for headaches and other people don't take it or any other medication at all.

Not too long ago my daughter's doctor friend told me that I was taking too many Advils {I was poppin 4 pills at a time}. So now I try not to take any at all.

I'm wondering what you do when you need Advil or something like that or are you a never-pop-pills kind of person?

I'm also interested in knowing what other things you do to cool out-other than visit Mudcat, that is!

Thanks.

I use a generic form of Advil/Ibuprophen. Usually the store brand wherever I am shopping. I find Advil to be very expensive. I use it because I have a bad reaction to Tylenol, and aspirin gives me tinnitis. Ibuprophen is the only thing I've found that can make cramps (you know which kind) go away completely. I also use it as an anti-inflamatory for muscles and joints, and for fevers.

I also read that anvil thread title as "advil" more than once ;-)

My chill out activities are pretty varied. But I like to sit outside on a beautiful day or at night and enjoy nature. Painting works a lot of the time, as does listening to classical music. And hanging out with my sweety... especially when he makes me laugh.

Advil is sort of related to those recently banned/withdrawn drugs, so it is good to not overdo them....but moderate use doesn't worry me.

(Ummmm...no...this being Mudcat with its usual cute & creative bunch of thread titlers, I read thread titles carefully, and I just assumed someone REALLY wanted an anvil...*grin*...I only opened it to see if they were gonna pound on it, or use it to drown trolls)

Well I must admit I never thought of Advil when I saw the anvil thread, but I do know about it. In fact it is now the only medication I use on the rare occasions I have a headache or muscular pain. I get the liquid capsules as shown here because they work very quickly and seem to be gentle on the stomach. Each capsule contains 200mg of ibuprofen, an anti-inflammatory, so I can see why it would be effective for your bursitis, Azizi. In the shops here they seem to be one of the cheapest brands - cheaper than the $5 advertised on that site. Also the generic brands here don't seem to have the fast-acting liquid capsules, which seem to work better.

Quite often I find that one is enough just for a headache. Four at a time certainly does seem excessive, and probably wouldn't work any better than two. Also there are warnings about prolonged use or use when you have certain medical conditions. I don't take them often enough for that to be a problem - maybe a couple of times a month. There are products with twice the amount of ibuprofen, but you need a prescription - at least here in Oz you do.

I don't take anything to "cool out" - only if I have a specific pain. The Mudcat certainly is a good way to relax, but I also like getting out and pottering in the garden. I can be totally in the moment when I'm pulling weeds. Strangely enough, I also quite enjoy other domestic activities too - washing and hanging out clothes, washing up, cooking, sorting out stuff in my room etc. Those are solitary activities - otherwise I like nothing better than to spend time with friends making music or chatting over coffee.

This wasn't withdrawn--but is it related to the big Rx painkillers that were voluntarily withdrawn? Vioxx, etc. I find life much more comfortable with ibuprophen around. Especially if I've been out working in the yard all day or lugging around various materials for work around the house (been here for 3 years now, still haven't finished remodeling).

Hold on here, if the other person was saying Advil and they had a cold, they don't need Advil at all. Or an anvil. What they need is Benedryl. Or hot tea sweetened with plub jab.

No, they don't need Benedryl unless they have allergies or a bee sting. Or some other things (it is also used when treating small strokes, I am told). But Benedryl isn't for colds.

Ibuprophen is an anti-inflammatory, for pain and/or swelling.

People's systems vary a great deal, I think. I 'upgraded' to Advil/ibuprophen a few years ago- and I wasn't satisfied with it. I never could tell when it started working. So I went back to aspirin.

I was reminded of that the other day when my knee was hurting. I had taken two aspirin not more than 10 minutes before when I felt the wave of peace waft across my knee. (Sorry to sound lyrical!) I was surprised- I thought it more commonly takes about 20 minutes. Guess I'll stick with aspirin.

For escaping from stress, for me there's no better way than live music.

Just don't get your meds mixed up.

Fiends who did took 'Senecot' for dire rear, & 'Immodium' for constipation.

No shit!!

I believe I read that Advil is harder on the kidneys and Tylenol is harder on the liver.

(So I use Advil because kidney transplants are cheaper and easier to find - thinking long range.)

Extra Strength Excedrin if I really have to take something. And I read Advil which I believe can be hard on the kidneys when taken frequently.

If it is to relieve stress induced headaches/pain, take a break and a walk to clear your head.
