Subject: Lyr Add: FALSE KNIGHT (Steeleye Span; Hart & Prior From: John MacKenzie Date: 20 Jun 05 - 03:10 AM Steeleye Span version "Oh, where are you going?" says the false knight on the road. "I'm going to me school," says the wee boy and still he stood. "What is on your back?" says the false knight on the road. "Me bundles and me books," says the wee boy and still he stood. "I came a-walking by your door," says the false knight on the road. "That lay in your way," says the wee boy and still he stood. "Flung your dog a stone," says the false knight on the road. "I wish it was a bone," says the wee boy and still he stood. "Oh, what sheep and cattle's that?" says the false knight on the road. "They're mine and me father's," says the wee boy and still he stood. "And how many shall be mine?" says the false knight on the road. "The ones that have the blue tail," says the wee boy and still he stood. "Oh, can I get a share o' them?" says the false knight on the road. "I wish you were in yonder sea," says the false knight on the road. "A good boat under me," says the wee boy and still he stood. "The boat will surely sink," says the false knight on the road. "I think I hear a bell," says the false knight on the road. "It's ringing you to hell," says the wee boy and still he stood. Tim Hart and Maddy Prior version "Oh, what brings you here so late?" said the knight on the road. "I go to meet my God," said the child as he stood. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pete and Chris Coe's False Knight #3 From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 20 Jun 05 - 03:19 AM All I can add (and it may well say so in the sleeve notes; I don't have the record) is that this probably came from Dorothy Dearnley, Seven Cheshire Folk-Songs. London: Oxford University Press, 1967, 6. I don't have the book either; the reference is from Roud. If you get no results here, you might email Pete Coe. Contact details are at http://www.backshift.demon.co.uk/. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pete and Chris Coe's False Knight #3 From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 20 Jun 05 - 03:31 AM Oh, "Giok" re-posted the Steeleye Span stuff while I wasn't looking. A kind thought, but not what Roberto asked for (Where SS they get it? I don't recall offhand). The song isn't very uncommon, but English and Irish sets are relatively rare. Most have been found in Scotland, the USA and Canada. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pete and Chris Coe's False Knight #3 From: John MacKenzie Date: 20 Jun 05 - 05:05 AM I actually posted two versions but due to poor spacing that is not immediately obvious, the second version if the Tim Hart and Maddy Prior version which I have on a compilation CD. Giok |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pete and Chris Coe's False Knight #3 From: GUEST,Lighter at work Date: 20 Jun 05 - 07:19 AM I believe that Steeleye's version is another of Martin Carthy's masterly pastiches. The melody used is a reel commonly called "The Primrose Girl." |
Subject: Lyr Add: FALSE KNIGHT (from Pete & Chris Coe?) From: ConcertinaChap Date: 20 Jun 05 - 08:55 AM I don't know if these are the words as sung by the Coes, but this is what Anne and I used to sing a long time back. We learnt it from Chris and Steve Wilson many and many a year ago. It's not stretching the imagination too far to guess that they got it from the Coes. Oh, where are you going ? Said the False Knight to the Child On The Road Oh, I'm going to my school Said the bonny little girl of seven years Oh, and what go you there for? Said the False Knight to the Child On The Road For to learn the word of God Said the bonny little girl of seven years Oh, I wish you on the land Said the False Knight to the Child On The Road With a good staff in my hand Said the bonny little girl of seven years Oh, I wish you on the sea Said the False Knight to the Child On The Road With a good boat under me Said the bonny little girl of seven years Oh, I wish you were in yonder tree Said the False Knight to the Child On The Road With a ladder under me Said the bonny little girl of seven years Oh, I think I hear the bell Said the False Knight to the Child On The Road And it's ringing you to Hell Said the bonny little girl of seven years old Chris |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE FALSE KNIGHT (from Dorothy Dearnley) From: Matthew Edwards Date: 09 Sep 05 - 07:41 PM This is the text of the song given in Seven Cheshire Folk-Songs, Dorothy Dearnley, Arranged by Freda Brislee, London, OUP, 1967. I've seen a note which suggests that Pete and Chris Coe learned the song from Dorothy Furber (or Furbur?) from Heswall, Cheshire. Dearnley's source was Mrs Stanley of New Ferry, but there are many similarities to the version by Pete and Chris Coe. THE FALSE KNIGHT "Oh, where are you going?" Said the false knight unto the child on the road. "Oh, I'm going to school," Said the bonny little girl of sev'n years old. "And what have you got there?" Said the false knight unto the child on the road. "My dinner and my primer," Said the bonny little girl of sev'n years old. "And what is for your dinner?" Said the false knight unto the child on the road. "Some bread and some meat," Said the bonny little girl of sev'n years old. "And will you give me share?" Said the false knight unto the child on the road. "Not a bite for your tooth," Said the bonny little girl of sev'n years old. "Oh, what are you going for?" Said the false knight unto the child on the road. "To learn the word of God," Said the bonny little girl of sev'n years old. "Oh, I think I hear a bell," Said the false knight unto the child on the road. "Yes, it's ringing you to hell," Said the bonny little girl of sev'n years old. This song was collected from the late Mrs. Stanley of New Ferry. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: False Knight (#3, from Pete & Chris Coe) From: Bill D Date: 09 Sep 05 - 08:31 PM The Coes sing it in some strange overlapping harmony, so it is hard to sort out... Oh, where are you going ? Said the False Knight to the Child On The Road Oh, I'm going to my school Said the bonny little girl of seven years What go ye the forest (?????) (that's all) Said the False Knight to the Child On The Road For to learn (the word of God)... (???) Said the bonny little girl of seven years I wish you were (well? up) yonder tree Said the False Knight to the Child On The Road And a ladder under me Said the bonny little girl of seven years |
