Subject: RE: Any January Songs? From: GUEST,henryp Date: 11 Jan 24 - 04:24 PM Further to Date: 01 Jan 23 - 04:33 AM 250 years of AMAZING GRACE. The hymn was written for a New Year service in 1773. The Earl of Dartmouth had a substantial country seat at Sandwell Hall in the Midlands, demolished in 1828. He also had a London townhouse at Blackheath. With all his other properties, he had no need of the Olney Great House, standing behind the churchyard by the river. Rev John Newton was therefore able to have the use of it for his Sunday schools and prayer meetings. Both Cowper and Newton wrote hymns for the occasion when in 1769 the Tuesday payer meeting for adults was moving into the largest room in the Great House. Jesus, where’er thy people meet’ written by Cowper and ‘On Opening a Place for Social Prayer’ by Newton. Cowper and Newton Museum It was January 1, 1773. John Newton led his congregation down the road from the parish church in Olney, England, to Lord Dartmouth’s Great Hall to sing “new” music not traditionally allowed by the Anglican Church. Newton loved to write hymns and poetry, and the hymn he wrote for this day was special. It spoke of his conversion, of his self-proclaimed wretchedness, and of the saving power of God’s grace. Since then, the words of “Amazing Grace” have struck a chord with millions across cultures and generations, and its popularity has never wavered. https://www.museumofthebible.org/magazine/exhibitions/celebrating-250-years-of-amazing-grace Link to post above by henryp AMAZING GRACE |

Subject: RE: Any January Songs? From: GUEST,henryp Date: 17 Jan 24 - 08:01 AM ‘At about a ¼ past 11 o’Clock we cross’d the Antarctic Circle...and are undoubtedly the first and only Ship that ever cross’d that line.’ — Captain James Cook, 17 January 1773. This was in the second of Cook’s three voyages of exploration. His ship was the Resolution. His first voyage was in the Endeavour. His third voyage was to discover the Northwest Passage. HMS Resolution, to be commanded by Cook, and HMS Discovery, commanded by Charles Clerke, started from Plymouth in 1776. On 14 February 1779, Captain Cook attempted to kidnap Kalani?opu?u, the ruling chief of the island of Hawaii. The decision to hold him in exchange for a stolen longboat was the fatal error of Cook's final voyage, and led to his death at Kealakekua Bay. The Song About Captain Cook by Peter Combe In Marton town not far from the sea There was a young boy who grew up to be A Yorkshire man in every way From Whitby town to Robin Hood's Bay At the age of 18, a labourer's son Fit and strong and six foot one He dreamed of a life on the wide open sea And knew that soon that's where he would be CHORUS He sailed from Plymouth away from England Cape Horn, Tahiti then Botany Bay On the good ship Endeavour and onto where ever The coast of Australia showed him the way http://www.petercombe.com.au/song/song-about-captain-cook The Song about Captain Cook |

Subject: RE: Any January Songs? From: GUEST,henryp Date: 22 Jan 24 - 11:21 AM 22 January On this day in 1944, the Allied army landing began at Anzio, Italy. D-Day Dodgers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SE5Cgvc3JqU Ian Campbell Folk Group Wikipedia; The song was written in November 1944 by Lance-Sergeant Harry Pynn of the Tank Rescue Section, 19 Army Fire Brigade, who was with the 78th Infantry Division just south of Bologna, Italy. There were many variations, but the song generally and sarcastically referred to how easy their life in Italy was. Although Hamish Henderson did not write the song, he did collect different versions of it and it is attributed to him in the sleeve notes of the Ian Campbell Folk Group's "Contemporary Campbells". Many different variations have been recorded. We're the D-Day Dodgers out in Italy Always on the vino, always on the spree. Eighth Army scroungers and their tanks We live in Rome – among the Yanks. We are the D-Day Dodgers, over here in Italy. The Volturno and Cassino were taken in our stride. We didn't have to fight there. We just went for the ride. Anzio and Sangro were all forlorn. We did not do a thing from dusk to dawn. For we are the D-Day Dodgers, over here in Italy.
