Subject: Tech: 3G Mobile - nerd alert! From: Dave the Gnome Date: 26 Jun 07 - 02:44 PM Ooooh - Scuse me while I play:-) Because I am - a) A computer god b) A technophile c) A nerd with to much time on my hands d) A sucker for the latest gadgets e) All of the above f) None of the above I am bringing you this thread courtesy of my T-Mobile 3G USB modem. For the plebs amongst you who don't understand it gives me high speed internet over what is, effectively, a mobile phone. The bad news is that now, on trains, you will get idiots on the mobile phone saying "Hold on, Nigel, I'll send you the latest sales figues by email as soon as we get a signal..." Shudder, shudder. Anyway. Less than £30 a month. Useage limit? Not sure yet if it is 3Gb or unlimited subject to fair usage. I'll find out. Well worth it for those with no land line or cable. Like me in my Newcastle flat while working. Just had a very nice dinner of fresh herring fillets and egg fried rice. Off to an open mic night in an hour. Life doesn't get much better:-) Cheers Dave |

Subject: RE: Tech: 3G Mobile - nerd alert! From: Jeri Date: 26 Jun 07 - 03:58 PM I'm offended by that beardist post! Well, not really. Just when you almost figure out one new bit of technology, something new and even more confusing comes along. I posted a message from my car, at my campsite at Old Songs Festival. I told someone I was going to go try to connect, and they said something like, "Don't bother - there's no WiFi here." I tried to explain I had a wireless modem that worked sort of like a mobile phone, and if you could use said phone, you could get to the internet. I can go practically anywhere in the U.S., although not everywhere has broadband. |

Subject: RE: Tech: 3G Mobile - nerd alert! From: Dave the Gnome Date: 27 Jun 07 - 03:42 AM I've just realised - It does get better:-) Abram day of dance on Saturday where I will be walking many miles, watching grown men dance round a portable maypole all day and perform brave but foolish acts of caterpillar wrestling! Wonder if I could set up my laptop with a webcam and... Nah. Too nerdy. Cheers Dave |

Subject: RE: Tech: 3G Mobile - nerd alert! From: GUEST,Geoff the Duck Date: 27 Jun 07 - 05:54 AM Not only gnome-like persons can be nerdy, Dave, old chap. This duck is being Virtually Nerdy. I'm just experimenting with something I found on the Interweb. It's called VirtualBox and creates a virtual machine on top of your operating system. Once you have that, you can install other operating systems as if it was a standalone computer. I have just installed UBUNTU linux in a virtual computer on my WinXp machine. This posting is coming from Firefox running on linux but hosted by Windoze. As yet I don't know how it will all work in practice, but I should be able to use free linux programmes, but when I want, switch back to the usual Win Dross at the stroke of a Ctrl button. Quack! GtD. |

Subject: RE: Tech: 3G Mobile - nerd alert! From: George Papavgeris Date: 27 Jun 07 - 06:06 AM Dave, that's great, but I have one too and cannot for the life of me get it to produce fillets of herring and egg fried rice. How did you do that? What's the function? |
|
Subject: RE: Tech: 3G Mobile - nerd alert! From: GUEST,Geoff the Duck Date: 27 Jun 07 - 06:12 AM George, if it was a computer the function would be GIGO - Garbage in Garbage out. Quack! Geoff. |

Subject: RE: Tech: 3G Mobile - nerd alert! From: Dave the Gnome Date: 27 Jun 07 - 07:23 AM Try vmware as well, Geoff. You can use either vmware player to run any of the dozens of already built vmware machines (including the Ubuntu secure browsing machine) or you can download the GSX server and build your own VM's. I am realy sad enough to have both... Hey - George - If I could figure out how to do that one I wouldn't be wasting my time here:-) I DO have a USB hub that keeps my coffee ward though:-P Cheers Dave |

Subject: RE: Tech: 3G Mobile - nerd alert! From: John MacKenzie Date: 28 Jun 07 - 05:04 AM I managed to connect my PDA/Phone to the internet when I first got it, and my next bill was over 3 times what it usually is. Unfortunately I did not know I was connected to the internet at the time, nor can I duplicate that scenario, I have got it working with the WiFi sharing the wireless modem I have at home, but have absolutely NO idea how I set it up to connect with a hot spot at my local coffee bar (60 miles away) when I am in their catchment area. It's true what they say, that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Giok |
