This is the ice shelf that formerly had a freshwater lake atop it, which drained away along with its unique life forms a while back (referenced in linked article). The Arctic is our canary in the coal mine, and it isn't looking too healthy.

Dr. Vincent said it's important to note that the Ward Hunt ice break is "small compared to what we've seen in the past."
Indeed, the largest ice break recorded in recent time was significantly larger: In 2005, the Ayles Ice Shelf, one of six in existence in Canada at the time, broke off in its entirety, rendering a 66-square-kilometre ice island that floated out to sea.
Still, the latest break "indicates ongoing change in this very sensitive area," Dr. Vincent said.
Dr. Mueller, whom Dr. Vincent calls the pre-eminent expert on Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, says he's concerned that the ice shelves will disappear completely.
"The take-home message for me is that these ice shelves are not regenerating," he said. "If we're looking at an indicator of whether climate is to blame, it's really the lack of regeneration that convinces me. They're breaking away so rapidly that there's no hope of regeneration," he said, adding that is "pretty strong evidence that suggests this is related to global warming."

Thankfully, the Arctic sea ice coverage grew one million sq. km. more than last year's. Last summer's melt in Antarctica was the smallest on record. Snow coverage in North America last winter was also the greatest in recorded history. Best of all the decline in global temperatures from Sept. - May (.8 C) was greater than all of the warming in the 20th century. What does it all mean I don't know.

It may mean that the recent increase in Sun intensity is going down. It is part of a cycle.

The Antarctic ice damage was done by warm water from volcanic activity deep under the ocean. The ice softening happened where the ice is over ocean only. Ice over land is something Antarctica has and the Arctic does not. That ice was just fine.

Well, yes and no. The Ross Ice Shelf and Queen Maud's Land have contributed their share. But then again the Antarctic Ice has been thickening.

Personally, I find anyone who states something as an absolute and only explanation of a phenomenon to be highly suspect. Over the years I've found that there is very rarely one cause for anything. But that's just my opinion, and your mileage may vary.

But a massive bloody shelf broke off there a year or so ago, and floated near NZ where the news choppers sent out guys to walk arouind on it and shoot footage...

Yeah, but it was thicker. See, the Antarctic ice is thickening while the Arctic ice is thinning. Eventually this will cause the globe to flip over and the South Pole will become the North Pole and vice-versa. Suddenly all of the people who have been walking around in places like Moose Jaw and DC will fall down and have to walk on their hands, while people in Canberra and Perth will have to get shoes. Water will spiral down the sink backwards and people will drive on the wrong side of the road.

Everything should now be clear.

Scientists have found that when the North and South Poles exchange places due to the weight of the Antarctic ice water will not spiral down the drain backwards. It will, instead, shoot up out of the drain. Turning on the faucets will drain the sink.
