Subject: RE: Eruptions Amazing pictures Iceland From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 03 Apr 10 - 11:33 PM Thanks, skarpi, those are exciting images. I'm amazed at how fast the lava flows. That must be because it is mixed with water from the glacier. I agree that it is dangerous to be there. Volcanoes give off dangerous gasses as well as red hot lava. |

Subject: RE: Eruptions Amazing pictures Iceland From: katlaughing Date: 03 Apr 10 - 11:55 PM That is incredible footage and, yes, I agree, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near it. WOW, though! Interesting they think the lava comes from so deep inside...I thought that was always the case, but it says that is rare. I am glad you and yours are safe. kat |

Subject: RE: Eruptions Amazing pictures Iceland From: Wolfgang Date: 04 Apr 10 - 11:06 AM What came as a surprise to me when I fist visited Iceland (second visit in a few weeks) was that the tourist guides tell you the age of mountains you see like in other countries they tell you the age of buildings. That is a wonderful observation, Wolfgang. It says so much about Iceland. Much of Iceland is aged in the thousands of years. Where I grew up, the rocks are aged in the hundred millions of years, and when we went north for vacation, the rocks were aged in the thousand-millions. So to me it is very strange to look at a landscape, as the Icelanders do, and know exactly how it came into being. |

Subject: RE: Eruptions Amazing pictures Iceland From: Carly Date: 05 Apr 10 - 09:59 PM Skarpi, Thanks for the great pictures. I am glad to hear that you have a healthy respect for volcanic eruptions. I was on the Big Island years ago when the lava first began to flow after a long dormant period; the power of Pele is awe-inspiring, and not to be taken lightly. I hope you and yours keep safe. Subject: RE: Eruptions Amazing pictures Iceland From: GUEST,TIA Date: 05 Apr 10 - 10:27 PM Leeniea: The fast-moving lava has no water content - it is way too hot. The water (if any) is driven off explosively as steam. Fast moving lava is either 1) very hot and thus fluid and/or 2) very low in silica content...that is, it represent almost mantle (as opposed to crustal) material. I think we are seeing a little window into the Earth's mantle. Very cool (I mean hot!). |

Subject: RE: Eruptions Amazing pictures Iceland From: skarpi Date: 06 Apr 10 - 05:20 AM this Lava is from the mantle yes , and its over 1000 C hot on Celsius yes those are a great pctures . kv Skarpi |
