Canadian PM, Paul Martin is trying to form a new organization but according to Canada.com:

"... Bush didn't bite.

He challenged Martin to prove the L-20 could work and wouldn't just be another venue for leaders to issue bland news releases written weeks in advance.

The L-20 concept has earned the enthusiastic backing of other world leaders, with Chinese President Hu Jintao tossing in his support during a meeting with Martin on Saturday.

The idea has also received support from existing G-8 countries like France, Russia and Britain."

Can you imagine? Bush has no agenda but his own! He had the audacity to give the Canadian PM the 'brush off'. He doesn't know Martin very well. Martin will remember this!

I've been doing a little reading but I still don't understand it. Is L20 a post-Kyoto concept?

Didn't a Canadian MP just get forcibly removed from her post for participating in a comedy skit about how stupid Bush is? Bush might be forgiven for thinking he has the upper hand when the Canadian govt appears to be tapdancing around him...no offense intended to all the wonderful Canadian catters.

Actually, when she crushed the Bush doll with her foot, there was an outcry but she wasn't kicked out of the Liberal party. It was when she bad-mouthed the Canadian PM, too, that she was asked to leave. She said something like she wouldn't cry any tears if Martin wasn't re-elected. She now sits as an independent.

L20 is not post-Kyoto. L20 is Martin's attempt to bring together many nations in order to be able to respond to security and health issues. It is his answer to what he sees as a dysfunctional U.N.

Here's a couple of links on the subject...

I hope they proceed with it regardless of whether or not the US decides to join.

I was just going to say that, Carol. Although US involvement would be nice, it isn't a condition of the other 19 countries working together. I hope Martin keeps it up.

" It is his answer to what he sees as a dysfunctional U.N."

Given that the UN is about as useful as a traffic cop on vallium, I can't see where the harm is in attempting something else... Maybe, just maybe it'll be a step 'forward'...

Wouldn't that be a pleasant surprise???

I'm trying to understand this whole L20 thing, but it's just not making sense for me.
Could anyone explain this L20 in laymans terms?

"The aim of this project is to provide pragmatic ideas and strategies for enhancing the effectiveness and legitimacy of the international economic and financial system through exploring potential future roles for the Group of 20 (†G20) in global governance. Our purpose is to identify feasible futures for a Leaders-20 (L20) that will be seen as a legitimate institution that promotes fiscally, socially, and environmentally responsible global governance policies, resulting from non-partisan research and participatory exchanges."

This is from one of the links posted above. New take on an old idea: world domination.

1)What can we do to get a piece of the action?
2)How can we con the public into thinking this is legit?

This group is a great idea. With the UN's dysfunctional inability to act on anything, it would be ideal to have a group that is more responsive to the world's problems. NATO would be an option, but this would be the developed world domintating the rest. With nations from all parts of the world, the L20 is not just one group of countries (the west or north) dominating the rest. It's the leading nations of the world together taking action.

you are right again, brucie. Its just another multi-national body of business interests. Martin says he believes that the economy is dependent on environmentally sound decisions but....

what about his off-shore money and all those rusty ships he owns? I wonder how many taxes he has paid in the last 20 years? I wonder, too, about the working conditions of the men aboard his ships with 'other' flags.

He's a smart bugger, though. Makes you wonder what he's up to. Lets face it, Chretien had a very good reason to mistrust him. He can be unscrupulous at times. This we have already seen.

I still think he has more class than Bush.

The members of the G-20 are the finance ministers and central bank governors of 19 countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi-Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States. Another member is the European Union, represented by the Council presidency and the President of the European Central Bank. The managing director of the IMF and the president of the World Bank, plus the chairpersons of the International Monetary and Financial Committee and Development Committee of the IMF and World Bank, also participate in the talks as ex-officio members.

'Paper prepared for a workshop on "G20 to Replace the G8: Why Not Now?," Sponsored by the Brookings Institution, Institute for International Economics, and the Centre for Global Governance, Washington, D.C., September 22, 2004'

Both of the above are from sites on the 'net--both official. I fail to see how a connection with global governance is going to help poorer countries. This has NWO written all over it. Ya can call a sheep a dog but ya can't make it bark--and it will still grow wool.

A+ on the homework, brucie.

Martin is a smart scoundrel! I'm thinking a new world order is going to happen regardless of how it will help poorer countries. I just don't want to see Bush have so much power that he runs rough shod with his 'crusade' throughout the world.

Maybe I'm hoping that if enough countries band together, economically, the U.S. will be neutralized.

Either that or we need the Messiah.
